This analysis I did of the effect the recent solar storm had on GPS accuracy was based on data from about 100,000 GPS receivers.

Today was MSP's 31st ICE flight of the year; MN50501 observed 58 deportees boarding, bringing the estimated total for January to 2,021.

The photo below, at 1:28 PM, was the 2,000th estimated deportee of the year was hobbling up the steps.

Please join us at MSP's Terminal 1 tomorrow to protest.

This is the tldr of "Did the giant solar storm mess with GPS?" There was an average drop in NACp ("Navigation accuracy category – position") of 0.8. Very roughly speaking, GPS error approximately doubled.
8/ There seems to be a delay between solar storm onset and anomalous decrease in NACp (the temporal resolution of the time axis is 60 seconds). Does it take time for the ionosphere to "heat up"?

I keep thinking about how we haven’t seen minors boarding the dedicated deportation flights here at MSP; how many kids are the commercial airlines at Minneapolis - St. Paul International flying to detention camps, and which airlines are they?

Kind of surprising that it took the giant solar storm to get me to look closely at the effects space weather has on GPS for the first time.
3/ This chart shows avg NACp (a GPS-accuracy indicator) for all aircraft worldwide starting Jan 16. You can see the ionosphere’s daily rhythm, which affects GPS signals. Kp: geomagnetic activity. The dashed line marks the solar storm peak; shortly after, there appear to be anomalous effects in NACp.

This is good. I'm skeptical it will happen, but it's still good.
For far too long, the federal government has operated immigration flights without full transparency. These ghost flights are tearing families apart, leaving loved ones in the dark, and giving immigration agencies free rein to act without oversight, transparency, and justice.

1/ This Embry-Riddle aircraft reported GPS problems at Daytona Intl during the recent solar storm: They lost WAAS and couldn't do the RNAV GPS approach. It made me curious what the overall effect was on aviation, so I looked at aircraft GPS data worldwide. (Video from the ATC app: atc.com)

Enhanced Radar's new ATC app is great! Integrated with ADS-B data, it uses their own custom ATC transcription model to power features like highlighting of the aircraft talking/being talked to, provide a feed of interesting events, and send notifications when something notable happens. www.atc.com

This is weird. Not sure how they would even implement dynamic, mobile TFRs.

Minneapolis ATC isn't tolerating a DHS helicopter trying to cowboy around in their Bravo airspace without squawking or talking on the radio.. (What's fucked up is I imagine there's a non-zero chance of them trying to retaliate against the controller.)

this is on the front page of news.ycombinator.com thanks to @lemonodor.bsky.social and i'm suddenly living a dream i didn't even realize i had
a lot going on but i finally wrote up a couple blog posts about my PTZ project and my live ATC feed transcription tool

idk if it's that interesting to anyone, but I want to do a better job documenting these kinds of projects this year even if it's just for me
