I think thatโ€™s a pretty good distinction. Letโ€™s make Grimm OCsโ€ฆ
November 22, 2025 at 10:35 AM
Also yeah, I definitely feel more removed from them as my precious OCs once I put them out there in a story meant to be interpreted. At that point my interpretation of them is secondary to the way readers interpret them.
November 22, 2025 at 10:19 AM
Yeah, I feel like there's this level of self indulgence found in OCs that you don't really find in characters for a story. I feel like the characters in my comic tow that line which is why I can understand why people could use either of those terms.
November 22, 2025 at 10:19 AM
I remember seeing the term OC most commonly used in the RP space growing up, which is what I associate with the most. I'm curious though, at what point of the webcomic process did you just start to think of them as just characters rather than OCs?
November 22, 2025 at 10:00 AM
Now to open up the philosophical discussion of "when is this au of a character so divorced from the source material that it's just my OC now"
November 22, 2025 at 9:52 AM
I think I would have to agree lol it feels like that's the biggest distinction
November 22, 2025 at 9:50 AM
Oh yeah I didn't even think about the sona culture lol it all feels like terms that are slowly converging to one meaning
November 22, 2025 at 9:49 AM
But I honestly do not care in the slightest because they're more vessels for a story that is open to interpretation. Are they "free-range" OCs then lol
November 22, 2025 at 9:38 AM
This is the one thing that confused me when people call my characters OCs. It feels like when they put that label on them it feels like there's this air of "I'm not allowed to touch this since it isn't mine."
November 22, 2025 at 9:38 AM
I am aware this question is very subjective, which is why I posed it in the first place since I wanted to see what other people thought. Forgive me if it feels like I'm needling too much as to your definition of it lol
November 22, 2025 at 9:34 AM
I'm mostly bringing it up since OFF was a phenomenon where a small project a guy made blew up into a fandom that people made OCs for (me being one of them).
November 22, 2025 at 9:34 AM
So where does that separation end? For instance, an indie project primarily conceived by one person, but involves a few other people also helping make it. stuff like OFF by Mortis Ghost was primarily made by him, but people don't call those characters OCs.
November 22, 2025 at 9:23 AM
I'm less concerned about the real definition of the term, and am more so just wondering the culture behind it. People would look at me strange if I called Luke Skywalker George Lucas' OC, I'm just wondering why.
November 22, 2025 at 9:13 AM
Okay, but no one ever calls anything made in a full piece of work OCs. If we off of literal terms then yes, Elphaba from Wicked would be considered an OC, but she rarely even is. Personally, I don't think that definition really explains distinction I feel like that's there.

What da...
November 22, 2025 at 8:54 AM
I don't really see my characters as OCs since they're more in service to whatever story I want to write, but people call them that. I don't take offense to that label at all, but I am curious as to what about them makes people think "OC".
