I did know that...because @lgions.bsky.social told me all about her when I asked them to choose a portrait subject for Wonderful Women of the World!
A beautiful portrait of a Black woman in an old-fashioned blue dress with white detailing and a lace collar. Mary is holding a mortar and pestle, and some ingredients are waiting to be added: ginger root, an anise pod, and some green herbs (rosemary, maybe?). Part two: COMPASSION Mary Seacole (1805-1881) could have been a nurse but her training in traditional Jamaican medicine wasn't recognized by the British establishment. Instead she served the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War in the 1850s by setting up a hotel where they could recuperate and be restored to health. When official recognition is denied, showing compassion in direct ways can change the world.
