Why do comic creators self-promote all the time?

Because we have to.

Even working with a publisher that's supportive, press only goes so far. The rest of the success falls on the shoulder of the creator rallying their fanbase.

For those that can't escape Photoshop, (such as myself RIP) request an agent to speak with on their virtual assistant to switch your plan not listed on the site. I requested to REMOVE generative AI "features" or extra apps -- it took me about an hour, but my plan went from 22.99 to 15.99 a month.

Someone asked me about processing rejection in traditonal publishing and I wrote too much. So, why not, you folks get to see it as well.
"Ahhh, I've been trying to answer this for a couple days because it is a sore subject for me, especially after talking to my agent about why my second pitch not getting picked up. I'm going to make some edits and resubmit, but it does hurt. Even this next pitch I'm working on, I'm working with the assumption I'm probably going to have to self publish it. I do wish I can give you a success story to aim towards! Publishing is a long game. You have to wiling to put your heart into something, see it fail, and then try again. My mom is also an author. She has published around 11 books now but it took her three manuscripts attempts before her debut. It's a hard industry we've found ourselves in, anon, one made tougher by the current state of things. My agent says that not a lot of things are being picked right now. It's easy to look at friends and peers getting book deals or awards and fool ourselves that it's easy for everyone else, but you don't see the failures and hard work that got them to where they are now. I haven't even talked about my attempts to get Twigs published! Or applying to awards and grants and never getting a single win. It's a hard and unfair industry." "Good Home was a passion project that, in hindsight, wasn't a good fit for a graphic novel. It was trying fit a series of ideas into a novel. Too many storylines, too many characters, not enough structure or attention to pacing. I got a lot of good feedback, editors interested but unable/unwilling to pick it up. Ultimately, it didn't go anywhere. And it was devastating! But there was so much love made into it. Motley, the second project, was worse feedback wise. It was genuinely all "we want something younger/older". People loved the art and story but completely unwilling to take a change on it. ALSO DEVASTATING. Though I am planning on doing a big edit on Motley later this year, I have a good idea of the direction for it. And I still completely believe in that story." I'm trying to get to the place where I can just divorce my feelings from the publishing process, where I can be completely professional about the whole affair. I haven't been entirely successful haha. But I did make a decision during Motley's submission process that I was going to post my work more and look into self-publishing. Because I do want my work to get out there! I don't want arbitrary standards completely define my creativity. That's why I started posting the Good Home Pilot. I wanted people to see the thing I was proud and liked enough to try and get published. It's been really nice seeing people like and react to it. Publishing is just one avenue to getting your work out there and seen. I hope your book gets published, anon. I hope you get a lot of good feedback, catch the attention of editors, and are able make those steps forward. But, as someone currently reckoning with my second failure of a project, it's okay if it doesn't Maybe it's not the right time or place for your story, maybe it needs a new perspective or round of edits, maybe it's in the wrong format. Rejection is not the end. My best advice is to try start a new project. I tend to start new graphic novel projects. Something new and shiny and exciting to devote all of that anxious brain energy to. There is nothing you can do while the book is being pitched. Do not let that stop you from being creative. Just keep moving forward. Nothing is wasted. Every project, every drawing, every word, you're learning and growing. Sometimes it's just not the right time. This ended up being long, sorry about that! It's been something, clearly, that's been on my mind. Hoped it helped in anyway. And, of course, good luck!
