It's an interesting interview because he's not actually saying that there's really anything substantial with which to smear Connolly; he's openly saying that it doesn't matter whether there is or not. He's advocating for American-style smearing as a strategy, regardless of the content of the smears.

I so agree with you. I'm an IT reader also and I have NEVER seen coverage of a presidential election by the IT like this. I'm from Galway and I know Catherine personally, though not well. The IT have made it clear that her "left-wing" identity is a problem for them from the start.
