Not done learning yet… Here for politics, books, and Hot Tooks (ok, mostly for Peregrin). Also education and parenting. I’ve got a creepy ex and a public job, so this profile is happily anonymous. ✌️

Abusers gag us.

They tell us what we can and can't say. They dictate who we can and can't talk to. They instruct what we're allowed to believe about ourselves. We're commanded to behave certain ways so we don't disrespect them. We can never ask for help. We can never say we're in distress. We can't

Hitting
isn’t the only
way we abuse;
it doesn’t take
physical contact
to cause psychological,
emotional harm;

thrown
words
become knives
meant to
pierce
the sense of self,
meant to disempower,
meant to control,
belittle;

words
hit
like
falling
on concrete

Working memory is a major barrier for people with ADHD. It's more prone to being erased, overwritten, or overwhelmed.

Expecting ourselves to follow changing or complex instructions without support, especially in a chaotic or distracting environment, is often a recipe for missing something

"What FIFA has done is created another layer of gambling on top of gambling. Who would have thought that FIFA would become a creator of exotic financial instruments?" This is not unrelated to the fate of democracy.

You’ve spent decades adapting.

Performing.

Surviving.

Now you finally know why - do you do with that truth?

Sometimes I pause and wonder what would happen if all the time and energy and especially $$$ that has gone into AI in education the past 2 years would have been redirected towards tangible things we already know works to make classrooms and schools better.

Oh well.

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

they are clearly trying to terrify everyone out of showing up to the No Kings protest and I simply do not think it is going to work

see you all there

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

I just tried to do a lit review yesterday on AI in the classroom and was absolutely flummoxed by the slop out there pushing AI as if it was written by… AI. 🤔🤷‍♀️

I guess I was naive, but the number of people willing to cede their work and their scholarship to a machine will never cease to shock me.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Good night, friends.
Tonight was deeply painful.

We at CDC do this work because we care.
It’s long hours, often feeling overworked and not enough pay, but we do it because we want to make the world a better place.

For more than four decades, France has had trains 3.5x faster than any of ours in the U.S. today.

We built the transcontinental railroad 156 years ago. What in the world are we waiting for?

"I should be over this by now" is almost always a sign it's time to lean into the tools of self compassion & radical acceptance. It's not a thought that sparks sustainable motivation-- it usually means we're slipping into old BS (Belief Systems) that don't serve our recovery.

Fortunately, Billionaire’s disease is a treatable condition. The treatment is taxation. Ask your congress if taxing the billionaires is right for you.

the list of things that needs to be done to repair this country is extensive but high up on it is breaking the power of the tech lords

they are convinced they are untouchable feudal barons whose money allows them to dictate everyone else's life and they must be disabused of that notion

Do we… just not ever sleep?

Is this the next stage of late-stage capitalism?

How many more stages can there be???

I’m tired. 😓

People are buying more clothes, but they don’t stay in closets for long. This fuels overproduction and waste.

An easy fix? Wear them longer. The planet will thank you!

I like how the news will be like “while the President claiming Portland was ruled by a giant skeleton named Mr Nibbles is not strictly true, it does speak to the anxiety of many Americans”
