New story up at Weird Horror. @jackklausner.bsky.social's chilling "We Didn't Used to Be Like This." It's sublime.

Also, Tron's whole novelty was "What if a whole movie was INSIDE a computer?" and now that's the default. All the big budget movies are like that. That's just how blockbuster movies are made now.

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.

Jesus is of one being with the father, but then he ate the Human Human fruit, allowing him to become a Son of man

My favorite part of One Piece is where Luffy is tempted for forty days in the desert by the Devil Fruit, who offers him the power to be a rubber man

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

I have to give Trump credit for achieving his vision in Chicago. At long last the city really is a scary, dangerous place, riddled with street violence and shootings, all thanks to a bunch of people who don’t come from here and serve no useful purpose.

I’m pretty sure this is what Karl Marx meant by commodity fetishism
lilliekoi.bsky.social
I think we should have a secondary commodities market for how sexy various products are. If I think a lot of people are gonna start fetishizing soy beans, for instance, or pork bellies, I should be able to make money off of that.

Every animal was supposed to have one sound. That was the deal. That was what we told our children. So why is it that dogs can go "Arf arf", "ruff ruff", "woof woof" OR "Bowwow"? That last one doesn't even have an F! This is chaos!

What does it say about the Minions if they call for bananas because they see something yellow and long and they believe they're finally getting their chance to indulge in cannibalism? That they find that similarity thrilling rather than unsettling?
lilliekoi.bsky.social
There's something unseemly about the fact that the Minions' favorite food is bananas. Like, it's a little bit too close to home. You can't help wondering if the Minions believe they're eating each other.
