That old stick about the Roman Empire, and how the actual sign of the collapse was a bridge falling down and nobody coming to fix it.
Replacing collapsed bridge 'nigh on impossible' cost for council
The Spey Viaduct was completed in 1886 but partially collapsed into the Moray river at the weekend.

@mrcharliejones.bsky.social @totallyshow.bsky.social is the omission of the European Edition from YouTube Music / Podcasts intentional? Maybe because there's no video?

Fundamentally, England is a ridiculous imaginary concept constructed out of something like nine cultures in a trenchcoat and wearing a stupid-looking colonialist hat.
Arguably England's legal existence is as "the bit of England and Wales that isn't Wales"

That's what rent means: the entry fee you must surrender, over and above your payment for services received, to those who have captured the essential resources you need to survive and prosper. Rent is a kind of private tax, that the poor and middle must pay to the rich.

People scoff at the idea of Universal Basic Income, calling it 'magic' or unaffordable. But that makes it obvious they haven't looked into it because they don't realise what it would replace, or that every time it has been trialled, everyone has used it responsibly & it worked.

Almost no one in Britain has a fucking clue how anything works. Elections. Taxation. Parliaments. Councils. Police. Most people don't have a scooby about the rules for any of them. That's what won the EU vote for Leave. Proper civics lessons in schools are desperately needed.
