Nudibranch du jour for #nudivember. This one, doto greenamyeri, is the weirdest yet. The giant balloon things are their cert and used for breathing and maybe digestion? Weird! And they can be cast off and regenerated. Weirder!

Dendrodoris behrensi, nudibranch du jour. I used colored pencil but watercolor might have worked better. Next time!

Today’s nudi:Chromodoris luterosea. Lovely purple and yellow blob. I used mostly watercolor with a little colored pencil and a little gouache.

Next nudibranch, diaphorodoris mission in chalk and colored pencil. Weirdly, this one was harder to draw. Maybe a dark background would help.

Nudievember! I did a colored pencil drawing of Tambja affinis, today’s nudibranch. My favorite part is that I have to spend 20 minutes looking up nudibranch anatomy to understand what I’m drawing. #nudievember #sciart #nudibranch #coloredpencil #ocean #oceanart

Finished painting Licorice Creek. It’s oil on canvas and biggish, 40” x52”. Loosely inspired by the Licorice Fern Trail at Cougar Mountain. If you’re in Seattle on June 5, I’ll have it on the wall at our open studios at 57 Biscayne in Pioneer Square, Seattle.

Banan slugs are us! I’ve been renaming Puget Sound waterways after myself 😉 and I added some local wildlife. I can talk slug romance like nobody’s business!

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

WIP of a large waterfall painting I’m working on. I’m hoping to capture the feeling of being in the waterfall and the power of rushing water. It’s getting there! #waterfall #waterart #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #wip

It's time for every TV meteorologist to say #IStandWithNOAA and tell their audiences to call Congress and demand a restoration of the agency. And start a #WeatherStrike.
I’m a federal employee, a research meteorologist at a NOAA lab (OAR-NSSL). I still have my job tonight. Many of my NOAA colleagues and many more of my fellow civil servants don’t. I want to share what people like me do. Instead of doomscrolling, maybe we can learn what civil service looks like.

How many times do you look at the temperature on your phone?

Most of those temperatures are from weather stations NOAA/NWS helps maintain…or they are a model interpolation from a model NOAA/NWS helped develop.

The radar data, satellite data, every single watch and warning…that’s NOAA/NWS.

YOUR FAVORITE WEATHER APP IS JUST A PRETTY DISPLAY OF NOAA DATA

Ppl seem to think that "NOAA weather forecasts" means climate-, boat-, or "in addition to my app"-weather. But the weather forecasts *we all use* are made from the NOAA data *we all paid for*

Make that part clear when you ⬇️
I’m thinking we should spread this news about the firings at NOAA as far and wide as possible. Like cancer research, weather forecasting seems likely to be broadly popular across the political spectrum. apnews.com/article/nati...

These aren't "faceless bureaucrats," they're friends and colleagues -- more like family, really. I worked on NASCO with Andy Rosenburg while a Knauss Fellow at NOAA.

Hell doesn't have enough levels for the jerks doing this, not only to family, but by extension, to all of us who benefit from NOAA.
