Our personal tech columnist @geoffreyfowler.bsky.social tracked the prices of a bunch of items on Amazon ahead of the latest Prime Day sale.

Turns out only a few prices went down, many stayed the same... and several went significantly *up.* www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
Column | I tracked Amazon’s Prime Day prices. We’ve been played.
Here’s what you should do to actually get a good deal on Amazon.

I forgot the term “coffee table.”

I kept saying “the thing in the living room with the books on it.”

Please don’t harass reporters who have nothing to do with this.

Also, I’m not implying intent. I just think this is a very difficult time and we (journos) need to be super careful with our framing choices.

I am not insinuating CNN was trying to trick people. I am a journalist with 25 years of experience (including at CNN) saying this was poorly done. Standards matter. Doing our jobs well in very difficult times means being exacting in what we put out. I think it showed poor news judgment.

The post definitely. I could make an argument for using it on the story. The “what is the insurrection act” hed is ok with it. One that implies Portland/Chicago would not be ok.

It’s a tough editorial call imo. Because this is such a charged issue.

Yes. Most people will not read the piece or look at the date on the photo. I’ve been a journo for 25 years, and we know how readers will interact with this. This is poorly done.
lizzieohreally.bsky.social
I know and respect Zach and the piece is good. It’s just a bad photo choice based on entirely how we know readers interact with stories and photos.
lizzieohreally.bsky.social
I read the piece and I like and respect Zach. I still think it’s a bad combo.
lizzieohreally.bsky.social
I have read the article and I know and respect Zach. But when a post circulates like this, without the impotent context, and you place it as a header image, you are strongly risking the reader drawing the wrong conclusion

This picture is from 1992 in LA and using it in this post and story shows terrible news judgment.
