New evidence from Chile finds that in-situ slum upgrading delivers larger gains in local economic development, both within treated slums and in surrounding neighbourhoods, at a lower cost than policies that relocate slum populations elsewhere.

Just learned about this study looking at methodological trends in psych and econ over time: online.ucpress.edu/collabra/art....

Matches my perception well: Nobody in psych bothers to (explicitly) try causal inference unless they conducted an experiment, not a lot of theoretical work either.

Claude Code é fantástico
Spending more time with Claude Code tonight and I do think one basic reality is that AI skeptics need to update their priors: Plenty of cause for concern, plenty of room to hit these companies for unethical behavior, resource demands, etc, but we are so, so far past the era of "stochastic parrots"
Move Over, ChatGPT
You are about to hear a lot more about Claude Code.

A study on Recursive Language Models (RLMs) shows they can process inputs up to 100 million tokens, vastly outperforming standard LLMs. RLMs allow models to decompose and recursively query longer prompts, marking progress in handling complex long-context tasks. https://arxiv.org/abs/2512.24601

'Taxi' and 'cab' essentially mean the same thing, but 'cab' doesn't come from 'taxicab.'

It comes from ‘cabriolet,’ which was a type of light carriage.

‘Taxi’ comes from ‘taximeter,’ which is the device that calculates the amount of a fare based on the distance traveled.

I'm sometimes accused of “political bias" for statements I make in my books, and I'll admit it's 100% true: I'm politically biased in favor of empirical reality and reasoning.

When too many lack such a bias, things like this happen: www.cnn.com/2026/01/27/h... #dataViz #infographics #dataJournalism

(And yes, they are both obviously interested in seeing their own products used, but hearing enough from other, independent coders that make me believe them. I wrote more about the shift here: www.oneusefulthing.org/p/management...)

60,000 US soldiers died in Vietnam over a decade, with huge political and cultural ramifications in a society of 216 million (1975).

325,000 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine in under four years, drawn from a society of 144 million (2024).

Really stress-testing authoritarian stability theory.
