Maybe the most beautiful part: they perform what they’re talking about. You can hear the joy of thinking together, pushing back, laughing, being moved. It’s a tiny model of the kind of political life we keep saying we want but rarely practice. Go listen to this beautiful gathering of two minds.

And the timing matters. In the larger context of what Mark Carney called the great “rupture” – institutions wobbling, late-stage individualism, hard authoritarian temptations – a conversation about how we actually gather is not a side issue. It’s critical. Maybe survival.

This episode is the opposite. It treats politics as the work of building and maintaining community: boundaries and bridges, conflict and repair, structure and hospitality. It’s about the “group help” we need after decades of obsessive self-help.

Trump is, in my view, an a-political (or anti-political) figure. Everything is transactional, about winning, humiliation, domination. No real listening, no genuine sharing, no “we” beyond the rally. Pure tactics without any commitment to common life, to anything that isn't about his power.

Early on, Ezra says that learning “how we pull the people we love closer and are more in community rather than more alone” is as essential as any political or personal discipline right now. That’s exactly right – and it’s exactly what we’re not doing.

I’ve listened to a lot of Ezra Klein, but his recent conversation with Priya Parker might be one of his very best. It’s about something we almost never treat as political, even though it’s the core of politics: how we gather, host and live together. The very nucleus of politics.

Danke dafür.
Wut?

„federal
ethnic
cleansing“
In Springfield, Ohio, people are preparing in advance of a “large deportation” promised by the president. To all appearances, the city is 2 or 3 days from a federal ethnic cleansing, grounded in a hate campaign organized by the vice-president and American Nazis.

- privat: Daten, Geräte, Kommunikation entflechten, Alternativen nutzen.

Andrees Kernargumente:

Unfortunately, that’s midnight over here. But thanks 4 doing this.

"If we think these matters through, we might regain some measure of self-confidence and even pride, that is, regain what former times called the dignity or the honor of man:
not perhaps of mankind but of the status of being human."

@mashagessen.bsky.social is right: this is where we are. Russian has a word for it-- "proizvol"--arbitrariness tinged with tyranny. The arbitrariness is a constituent element of the terror. Americans lack words to grasp what's happening to us. History can help.
