Why are people focusing on Nigel Farage's schoolboy racism? He has a much more recent track record here. Exhibit A: Gerard Batten, who served as UKIP General Secretary under Farage, served alongside him as an MEP & London Mayor candidate. The man who welcomed Tommy Robinson into UKIP.

One of the most powerful arguments for democracy is that it brings the rulers into direct contact with the ruled. As long as they are not completely callous and immoral, this usually elicits some level of empathy. Even Marjorie Taylor-Greene is not immune to this it seems www.npr.org/2025/11/15/g...
Trump cuts ties with Marjorie Taylor Greene, once among his top MAGA-world defenders
The dismissal of Greene — once the epitome of "Make America Great Again" — appeared to be the final break in a dispute simmering for months.

Wikipedia says Shaheen is an academic. BBCQT implies you can’t trust what she says b/c she’s an ‘activist’. Someone who Wikipedia calls ‘a former academic’ who now campaigns for Reform & wants to be its first Home Secretary is an ‘academic & author’ who you can trust. Maybe they use Grokipedia now.

I think we under-estimate the role poorly designed targets in schooling plays in creating this situation. Governments chasing literacy and numeracy test scores that secure corporate investment create conditions that squeeze out the space for young people to develop a love of reading and learning
I think we under-estimate how many people are miserable because they have no enthusiasms, no hobbies, because they gave up reading and quit learning when school ended. It's shocking how much studying a beloved subject elevates your mood. It will transform your life.

As a society, our financial system around information is insane. It is the kind of system you would create if you wanted everyone to go insane.
In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

A thought I keep returning to — and that’s underscored by today’s news — is that a legacy publication or a deep-pocketed investor could hire an astonishing array of talent right now and make the best newspaper in America overnight.
Well, this is fucked up and depressing.
