The Ladies of Llangollen, Eleanor Butler (1739–1829) and Sarah Ponsonby (1755–1831), were two upper-class Irish women who lived together as a couple.
The pair moved to a Gothic house in Llangollen, North Wales, in 1780 after leaving Ireland to escape the social pressures of conventional marriages.
The Rt. Honble. Lady Eleanor Butler & Miss Ponsonby 'The Ladies of Llangollen' Illustration by James Henry Lynch
The two women are depicted in formal black dresses, wearing top hats, and walking together with a small dog by their side. They are set against a natural landscape backdrop with rocky terrain and possibly a distant view of an abbey or ruins. Sarah Ponsonby (left)and Lady Eleanor Butler, recluses known as the Ladies of Llangollen, seated in their library. Lithograph by R.J. Lane, ca. 1832
This is a black-and-white lithograph or engraving showing the Ladies of Llangollen, Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, wearing masculine outfits and seated together in an ornate room. A sleepy cat is also sitting at the table. They are surrounded by various objects and books, indicating a scholarly or intellectual setting. The room's interior is richly detailed, emphasizing their domestic life. Susan Murray Tait: Ladies of Llangollen 1819
This is a watercolor painting that depicts the Ladies of Llangollen walking together. Both women are wearing dark cloaks with short, white wild hairstyles, giving them a cool androgynous appearance. They are shown on a pathway, emphasizing their close companionship as they walk side by side.

Today's #SapphicSeptember rec:

Chase of the Wild Goose, by Mary Gordon and published by @lurideditions.bsky.social

Originally published in 1936, this is a gloriously romantic, melodramatic and weird retelling of the lives of the Ladies of Llangollen.
The cover of Chase of the Wild Goose, by Mary Gordon. The cover is a vibrant pink. A quote from Sarah Waters says: "A fascinating piece of queer literary history."

Jet-lagged, gender-shifting, and gloriously unclassifiable—In Transit follows Pat through airports, opera, revolution & reinvention. A 1969 anti-novel of sexual amnesia, identity flux & feminist undergrounds. Brophy was way ahead of us. #QueerLit

One of the most promiscuous, brilliant, + endlessly fascinating novels of the 60s In Transit is being republished 🎉 Here “the empirical world shivers and becomes more malleable, more erotic, more wild. Bends into itself and returns,” as Helen Marten says of her own Aristotelian disintegrations...

Just leaving this here, as they say.

'In Transit is about a series of disintegrations of rulebooks, including the sexual
stereotypes, ending with the question of whether Aristotelian logic might disintegrate,
whether we are mistaken in thinking that a thing cannot be both X and
not-X' Brigid Brophy

Mother's Day 2025. Brigid Brophy didn't cook, sew dust or garden. Instead she wrote *the* witty niche-cult sexual adventure novel of the 20th century, In Transit. New edition, top right, coming soon.
