People love archaeology, but they perceive it as a luxury. It's always been a bizarre contradiction, the awareness of the fundamental importance of history whilst not grasping how inherent archaeology is to that understanding. Archaeology is relentlessly undervalued within public investment.
New report on how people engage with archaeology is out - Trowel and Error: A Public User Needs Survey. Lots to digest but key conclusions are: 1) archaeologists risk undervaluing and hiding ourselves, our practices and the role we play in society... www.archaeologyuk.org/our-work/tro...

Beyond the methodological flaws and lack of evidence, the mental model of a large number of NZ adults is that mathematics is a synonym for arithmetic. Geometry and algebra are not useful for accountancy so they don’t count.

Not only is science education going to suffer from the manufactured crisis in maths education, the science curriculum itself has also been under attack to remove components of critical thinking and epistemological foundations.

NZ’s draft science curriculum favours rote learning over critical thinking
Critical thinking is an essential skill students should be encouraged to develop as part of their science learning. NZ’s draft science curriculum fails the test.

Govt committee that has 6 NACTFirst members and 5 opposition parties members votes in favour of law that advantages NACTFirst despite vast majority of public submissions being against it.

They aren't even subtle
This Bill could invalidate the votes of enough people to swing the next election in favour of the current government for no reason other than that they failed to fill out the correct piece of paper by the "proper" time (as defined by the people who benefit from the rule change).
Justice Committee recommends passing Electoral Amendment Bill with some amendments
The bill would prevent same-day enrolments, ban prisoners from voting, and tighten up the rules around treating.

My nephew is dyslexic and his high school offers an alternative learning track for students like him.
My sister called the school yesterday to confirm she'd like him enrolled in that programme and was told it might not be available next year because the new curriculum doesn't include it. 😱😱

surely if principals are calling her (which principal has the phone number for the minister of education?) to complain, they must also be emailing her too.

so there ought to be a paper trail...

unless she lied. Time to find out.

🟠I've been rewatching the Defunctland charting Ferris wheel through Epcot and it's reminding me how different Disney used to be considered in the 90s and 2000s? Like it feels weird cause back in the 90s he was absolutely thought of a secretive megalomaniacal weirdo who probably froze himself

Yup. Epcot was supposed to be a new type of community. Residents would have been required to work, with no private property ownership and no voting rights, in a utopian, autocratic company town model that would be run by the Disney company.

Do Labour members really still support this Temu Keir Starmer as leader going into the next election? Shifting the Overton window to the right is just going to make everyone miserable, we need aggressively progressive, IMO of course, when you’re at the pointy end of policy, this shit matters. #nzpol
