Maybe at the elected member level, like any elected roles. But RCs employ many highly-qualified scientists, land/ emergency management professionals, transport planners, etc - who does this work & where does this workforce go if RCs get axed? You'll miss them when the next flood/disaster strikes

In a way it's kind of funny that the govt thinks it's ok to just, immediately after local body elections, announce that the regional govts we voted for are for the chop, and the people we elected as city and district mayors are going to have different jobs to the one we just voted them into.

And here we go again! Nicola Willis’s pre-Christmas Grinch show.

Put your wallets away for Black Friday NZ’ers, winter is coming (again).

Those blimmin tax cuts, ferries, landlords, tobacco companies, Govt Board fee increases, Gumboot gifts, … so darn expensive.

Remembering various people telling me that actually citizen Thiel is a serious thinker, it was I who was biased, probably blinded against his wisdom by what could only be my base partisan motivations, and what have you.

I see he has now advised the Vice Potus that the Pope is the antichrist.

The Govt wants to gut environmental protection. It also doesn't want strong councils. If it did it would create unitaries. It wants weak supplicant bodies and central control. This is authoritarian AF.

And those two precedents point in quite different directions for the future of this government; Lange was handily re-elected & with Bolger... had we had MMP in 1993 Labour & the Alliance would have turfed him out after 1 term.

Says something about the way New Zealand politics has worked during my lifetime that there are *two* ready comparisons to this government's reckless hatchet job on the basic institutions of our society: the first terms of both the Lange and Bolger governments.

This is such an important point.
We can't get off this path by tinkering around the edges; we need a radical revisioning of how our government and society function.

One thing that NZers need to understand is that going for 100% completion on the original Rogernomics agenda is not a reversible thing. We will need to transform all this wreckage into something new. We can't just "rebuild", as has been proven many times over.
