Has a journo asked the PM if his local government minister here is describing the strict 'one person, one vote' model of democracy that the PM was so passionate about when discussing Māori wards etc when on the campaign trail just 2 short years ago?

The BBC removed a line about Trump being the most openly corrupt president in American history...from a lecture about the cowardice of today's elites.
I wonder if the BBC has heard of the Streisand Effect
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Its vital for democracy that local government votes the way central government wants while still being locally funded. Its local taxation with token local representation.

It is absolutely critical to democracy that communities directly own their water infrastructure but also unimportant that those same communities get to decide how they look after our environment?

If cognitive dissonance could be harnessed for fuel then we could all live happily ever after

The Local Water Done Well reforms were the Government getting Councils to take the heat for their water reforms, these Local Government Done Well proposals are the same for everything else Local Government does that central Government doesn't want to do.

It was the cheese roll milk tanker or another rant by pompous Minister for despoiling our environment, Shame Jones.

The tanker was both more charming and more eloquent.

Apart from the hated RMA functions, it ignores all other regional tasks eg biosecurity, maritime, flood protection. It's incredibly stupid.

The Govt wants to gut environmental protection. It also doesn't want strong councils. If it did it would create unitaries. It wants weak supplicant bodies and central control. This is authoritarian AF.

NZ has had two major reforms of subnational government so far: 1876 and 1989

As the guy who literally wrote a book on the demise of that first system, *and* as someone who generally supports more unitary authorities, my considered opinion is that this proposal is completely insane
No more regional councils - major shake-up of local government announced
The government says it is not a power grab, but about "making local government fit for purpose".

Remember, govt has advice that it can’t repeal the local act providing for Ngai Tahu representation on Canta RC by a govt bill without some dodgy suspension of SOs etc. So, instead, it looks like ACT is going to tear down the institutions itself making the local act moot.
