And … in a supermarket? “I’m such a terrified quivering little puddle of jelly, I need a gun on my person at all times”

Why is Pete Hegseth running the Department of Defense?

I think anyone who feels a need to openly display a gun while <checks notes> shopping for groceries is a person who would just love to shoot someone.

3/ “Follows the law,” my ass. They are pandering to the gun-toting yahoos of Florida, plain and simple.

2/ “Private property owners and businesses can still prohibit firearms on their premises.” And yet, a huge Florida grocery chain has said it will permit open carry because it “follows the law.”

Florida: open carry of firearms in grocery stores. I will walk out if I see a gun. People are idiots. If you want my business, you’ll post a sign that says NO GUNS ALLOWED.

Naming local streets and roads is a function belonging to local governments in the U.S. If someone tells your town it must rename a local street after [a person, anyone], then you’re living in a dictatorship.

Florida is requiring streets to be renamed.

2/ So apart from the fact that the workers who make our clothes and plastic junk in Southeast Asia, Bangladesh and China are paid vastly less than even undocumented immigrants in America—if you build a modern factory, it won’t include those jobs.

Yesterday I heard something about robots in factories, and my mind wandered (as it does) to the idea of “bringing back manufacturing” to the U.S. As 21st century manufacturing is largely performed by robots, you won’t see a huge number of human workers in a modern factory.

Press access and the free operation of journalists—these are important so that abuses of power are revealed to the public. When a government restricts journalism, or the access of journalists to the corridors of power, you get a horror show. You get death camps.

A sensible take.

Also bear in mind that various Evangelicals do not consider Catholics to be “Christian”—the word has its own meaning in some groups.

In the US, "Christian" is often just a euphemism for "white and racist."

Because again, the data shows that in the US, Hispanic folk attend church more frequently than white folk.
🤡

And Black folk attend church more often than Hispanic folk. Black folk attend church more than any other race.

Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA announced they'll be hosting their own Super Bowl half-time show with "fully Christian, American" performers. 🤣
Bad Bunny is both Catholic AND American. Just not "white enough".

Step 1 to eliminating my Amazon dependency is ignoring Prime Day.

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

Gotta make it at home to get enough sweetened condensed milk in the mix!

I grew up eating lots of that in Pennsylvania, adjacent to Amish Country. I wonder if I would still love it?

I’ve been party to spirited discussions in which British and Australian people debate whether peanut butter and jelly (jam) is disgusting. Always need to school some of them that American jelly is not Jell-O.

Sweet potato peeled & cut into 1-inch cubes, tossed in olive oil with ancho chili powder, salt, garlic powder. Bake on parchment paper for 30 minutes at 400 degrees F. Better if you toss the cubes a bit at 15 minutes.
