In the Name of Suffering This poem explores the paradox of suffering—how it shapes us, defines us, and yet is something we learn to live with. It examines the tension between fighting against pain and accepting it as part of who we are, using the image of a crown of thorns to symbolize that struggle. ⸻ In the Name of Suffering I wear my crown of thorns with careful grace, Each spike a memory of battles fought. The blood it draws, a mark I can’t erase, A map of all the things I’ve yet to plot. The weight upon my brow is not of gold, But something darker, heavier, and deep. It whispers to me in a voice that’s cold, A truth too bitter for my soul to keep. I wonder if this pain will ever cease, Or if I’ll learn to cherish all the weight— For in this suffering, I find my peace, A quiet place where fear and grief abate. So let the thorns remain, and let them sting, For in their pain, I find the strength to sing. I wanted to tell her, “Don’t fear the fall, You’ll rise again, even when you’re weak.” But the fear of failure, too loud, too tall, Kept my lips sealed, and my heart too meek. So I watched her fade, as I stood in place, Holding the advice I couldn’t embrace. Falling Upwards This poem explores the paradox of failure as a source of strength, embracing the idea that each stumble can propel us forward. It reflects resilience, finding growth in the midst of struggle, and rising again despite setbacks. ⸻ Falling Upwards I climb with feet that falter, bruised and slow, Each step a stumble, yet I rise once more. The peaks I seek are hidden in the glow Of distant dreams that whisper, yet ignore. The ladder groans beneath my weight, unsure, As trembling hands stretch wide for fleeting grace. I fall, I break, but still I must endure— Each failure feeds the fire I can’t erase. I fail upwards, scraping at the sky, In pain, I find the will to fight again. Each fall reminds me of the worth of why I rise with nothing left to lose or gain. For in the failing, I uncover light— A lesson learned through every reckless flight. The Ones Who Stay This poem reflects on the quiet presence of those who endure, offering unwavering support through darkness. It acknowledges that not all battles are fought in light, but those who remain in the shadows, steadfast in their silence, are often the most essential. ⸻ The Ones Who Stay The dark, it speaks in voices soft and low, Like lullabies from something long decayed. It hums beneath the floorboards, sweet and slow, And finds me when the rest have walked away. It knows the names I never say aloud, And tastes the salt behind my crooked grin. It wraps around me like a grieving shroud, And lets me wear the silence from within. No promises of light or better days, No lies dressed up as something called a plan— Just whispers threading through the blackened haze, That say, “I see you breaking, where I am.” It doesn’t save me, doesn’t even try— But stays when even hope has passed me by.
