IANAL but work in the legal field. I haven't done anything at municipal/county level for ages, but the inside baseball I know about the Cook County Court system is "clear the backlog at all costs".
So as you know, I am having surgery next month, and I filed motions for continuances in my cases as a result.
Most of them were granted. Of those, about half gave me less time than I asked for. Three were outright denied.

There was definitely some of this going on with Johnson prior to the ICE raids. Also, some spikes in crime in well-to-do neigborhoods like Logan Square didn't help perception, despite overall stats showing a decrease.
NYC is going to have the world's biggest media-manufactured crime panic in history the second Mamdani is elected. They aren't even going to wait until he is inaugurated. Whether or not you like the guy, you need to start preparing now for the fire hose of disinformation that is about to activate.

So far, this Halloween is business as usual. In addition to candy, I also have whistles out, which are also a hit with the kids (and parents), though some of them started blowing them immediately 🫠
All in all, it's been very heartening to see the neighborhood being resilient in spite of government.

While we are at it, you take capitalism to its logical end point, that end point is extinction. Capitalism is the world where destruction = profit.
I know nothing should surprise me, but I'm stunned by this picture. If you own a designated historic property (not that I do), usually you can't even install a doorbell that isn't period-specific. Or at least you wouldn't. This makes me heartsick.
