my heart goes out to biological wastewater treatment
last big find: seems like someone didn’t consider existing drainage utilities when putting in this little retaining wall around the Cotton Bowl 😭

this was the only spot I saw where they had to jut the wall inward to avoid covering over a curb inlet cover
speaking of trench drains, Fair Park has a TON of little slot and trench drains scattered around (though quite a few of them have clogging issues or are partially paved over even)
I also saw a bunch of these “no dumping drains to creek” markers, but they were all in spanish (aside from “ City of Dallas Stormwater Management”)

though technically an arroyo is a liiiiittle different than a creek
I went to the state fair with some friends this weekend, here’s what I saw!!

to start, here’s a silly combo inlet using what appears to be trench drain grates/frames? definitely a custom job 😭
LEGENDARY FIND DURING LAST NIGHT’S WALK: CITY OF DALLAƧ STORM SEWER INLET COVER!!!!!
went on a walk along a trail yesterday and saw lots of swale-based drainage!a couple grate/drop inlets at low points (with tiny little outfalls!) and a pair of curb inlets, one of which had an open back to capture flow from the grass swale behind it!!

went on a walk tonight and saw some sad looking combo inlet grates :(

the first one looks like the grate fully failed and they’re just throwing traffic channelizers down there (that one in the structure’s almost 4’ tall!), and the second one lost a vane :(

✨Happy maned wolf day!✨

Today is international maned wolf day! To celebrate this magnificent creature I ask you to tell a relative, friend or loved one about them! It's the prettiest most leggy animal. They're amazing and deserve our attention. Spread the leggy love ❤️

It's International Maned Wolf Day today

Have you pet a maned wolf yet?

If not, go do it! Doesn't even have to be me!
IT’S INTERNATIONAL MANED WOLF DAY, REJOICE!!!!! 🥳
other interesting note: the access cover seems to be for “City of [blank]”

that’s a new one lol
went to the movies with bf this morning and saw this funky little y-inlet in the parking lot!

though I’ve heard drop inlet and y-inlet used fairly synonymously, I definitely think this one’s a better candidate for the y-inlet name since it only had openings on two sides lol
to be fair, Texas is an awfully big state and TxDOT’s basically the golden standard for roadway-related design around here 😭

ironically I haven’t worked directly on a TxDOT project since I was an intern, most of my experience is just recreationally googling their manuals and standard drawings lol
AIN’T NO WAY

WHY’S THAT???
sure enough, the only reasonable pipe diameter for a single pipe with approx. 21’ (+/- 0.5’) wingwalls (L) was 48”, which wasn’t far off from my 42/48” guesstimate!

the table also shows that wingwall dimensions are in fact dependent on bank slope around the outfall (4:1 H:V in this case)
fun little side note abt this: I couldn’t figure out the exact diameter of the storm drain pipes but knew the wingwalls were LONG (~21’, likely due to the basin slopes) and remembered that CoFW seems to use TxDOT standards pretty often and decided to check there…
fully had to pull over while driving in Fort Worth this weekend bc this silly little basin with masonry stone facades on the wingwalls to match the roadway walls

definitely the spiffiest storm drain outfalls I’ve seen in a while!
their recessed brick top curb inlets look so silly compared to typical recessed inlets (more typical inlet for comparison)

side note: the road/sidewalk seems to have gotten improvements not too long ago, you can see where they repaved the localized gutter depression in front of the inlet!!
went on a walk in Addison today and snapped some neat pics as we went!
they’re so neat and I never get to see them!!!
