When I was placed on the Professor Watchlist in 2021, people sent death threats about my children. I had security officers monitor my 8yo at school.

Where is all the outrage for those of us who have been targeted for years? Where is the outrage for our families?

My own colleagues are silent.

A society becomes totalitarian when its structure becomes flagrantly artificial: that is, when its ruling class has lost its function but succeeds in clinging to power by force or fraud.

For the cynics who think it doesn’t matter, that the compensation for authors whose work was stolen will be so low it’s not worth fighting, I personally think it’s worth making the monetary punitive damage these companies suffer as big as possible to deter similar theft in the future.

A federal court ruled that ANTHROPIC illegally copied MILLIONS of books to train its AI.

All authors and publishers whose books were downloaded by Anthropic from pirate websites are subject to receiving compensation. This could involve your work.

I’ve seen this sort of sentiment pop up a few times this week, so just to mention: this happened because of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, when reviews became not an argument but a numerical datapoint influencing the seemingly objective measure of a piece of art’s worth.

But here's what bothers me: On more than one occasion I've seen an artist suggest that a critic's job now is to basically be an extended arm of PR. And while sometimes the best thing we can do is be advocates for great art, that's far from true, and the implications are a little gross.

Absolutely fuck Air Canada, solidarity with everyone on strike, this is such an appalling state of affairs. I thought I had a working understanding of the grievances & demands but it’s so much worse than I thought.

Defying an order to end the strike, the union's president proclaimed:

"If we stick together, they can’t fire us all."

Here's what Air Canada flight attendants are fighting for:

Remember, kids! Hating on workers who want better working conditions is boot licking 101.

Flight attendants are literally not paid until the doors close on the plane. If you showed up to work at 9am but didn't start getting paid until 11am, you'd feel some kinda way, too.
clareblackwood.bsky.social
People smugly saying "Why did you take the flight attendant job if you didn't like its terms?" reeks of "Kids these days just don't want to work anymore - in MY day we worked terrible jobs and didn't complain." So we're just...never supposed to fight for better? Is that it? Cool, thanks! 👍🏻

理良猫 by Girls

This was a fascinating find because this band apparently set one of the molds for josei bands in the 70s. Half of their album is Japanese while the other covers songs like Honky Tonk Women and Cherry Bomb.

It’s so hard to find them on streaming platforms…
The front of the album is orange with the top left corner reading the Kanji title of the album and then below that a yellow explosion with the word Girls written in pink. In front of that is the drawing of a woman with curly hair and a body suit with stockings. She holds a microphone with her back to us

The main picture shows five Japanese women the one in the center is wearing a leopard print corset with black shorts. She has garters holding onto fishnets. She is biting her finger while looking at the camera. The women to the left of her from top to bottom are wearing a black shirt and a white scarf and the one below is wearing a pink shirt and white trousers, holding onto the left of the girl in the center. On the right are another two women from top to bottom wearing a black shirt and jeans, her hand on her hip and then at the bottom a woman wearing flannel and long bangs holds onto the center woman’s other leg The back of the album it’s black, with the Girls logo at the top and the name of the album in Kanji and has black and white photos of the band members.
From right to left— Gill (ジル) vocals and bass, Ilia (イリア) lead guitar, Rita (リタ) lead vocal, Lena (レナ) side guitar, and Sadie (サデイ) drums.

Track list

Side 1
理良猫
変は不思議な味
北口通り
怪盗X号
殺人事件
キッスでさよなら

In The Flesh by Harry Stein
Honky Tonk Women by Mick Jagger and K Richard
Cherry Bomb by Joan Jett and K Fowler
Trivial Matters
Hard Luck Woman by P. Stanley
Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry Side one of the album A sticker describing the record and the band reading
Pioneers of the josei rock movement, Japanese girl group Girls looked to the Runaways for inspiration, successfully adapting their “Cherry Bomb” in a mix of Japanese and English. Racier than contemporaries such as Mizutama Shobodan (or Polkadot Firebrigade), the band was driven by the teasing antics of lead singer Takako Nomoto, alias Rita, and the axe work of Atsuko Okuno, alias Iria/Ilia. This rivetin [sic] debut sees Girls tackling “Honky Tonk Women”, “Johnny B. Goode”, and Blondie’s “In The Flesh”, title track “Nora Neko” or “Stray Cat” another of their irresistible hits.

Oh, Two Major Dramas Sung And Performed by Players of the Komparu and Kanze Schools of Noh, Tokyo.

This was an interesting find even if I can’t fully understand it. It did come with a handy book to at least get the gist of what both plays are about in English! It also came out of Lawrence HS…
The front of the record reads Noh in the kanji for “hon”. To the left of it is a picture of a Noh production The inside of the record giving information about Noh as an art form and a summary of the plays on the records. Side 4 of the two record set for the play Kantan. I chose this one because it has a stamp showing that it used to belong to Lawrence High School in Kansas. The booklet that came with the record. The cover reads Noh Plays of Japan: Hagoromo and Kantan. Caedmon Publishers, New York

浪曲十八番競演集 (The Favorite Roukyoku Recital) by 天中軒・雲月 IV (Tenchuken Ungetsu IV).

Roukyoku is a sad story told by way of sung and spoken word accompanied by a shamisen. This record features two stories— 「花の雨」(Rain of Flowers) and 「芋代官行状記」(An Account on the Behavior of the Potato Magistrate).
The front of the record When you open the record cover— from right to left—it shows the whole story of Rain of Flowers and the start of An Account of the Behavior of the Potato Magistrate. The right of the cover is the continuation of An Account on the Behavior of the Potato Magistrate. This side of the record is Rain of Flowers. The other side is An Account on the Behavior of the Potato Magistrate

Targeting “mail in” balloting will disenfranchise military members who are serving overseas and on naval vessels at sea. It will also disenfranchise the elderly who might have mobility issues in getting to the polls, not to mention those who might have no transportation resources at all.

As a former Texas State Rep, let me be clear: LOCKING Rep. Nicole Collier inside the chamber is beyond outrageous.

Forcing elected officials to sign “permission slips” & take police escorts to leave? That’s not procedure. That’s some old Jim Crow playbook.

The people dominating our political landscape, culture, and economy are just so stupid and full of shit it's almost impossible to describe
A transcription of a conversation between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and podcast host Theo Von on Von's podcast, in an excerpt from the Atlantic article "AI is a mass-delusion event" by Charlie Warzel:

"Sam Altman: I do guess that a lot of the world gets covered in data centers over time.

Theo Von: Do you really?

Altman: But I don’t know, because maybe we put them in space. Like, maybe we build a big Dyson sphere around the solar system and say, “Hey, it actually makes no sense to put these on Earth.”

Von: Yeah.

Altman: I wish I had, like, more concrete answers for you, but, like, we’re stumbling through this."

RFK wants to lean into “whole cell” vaccine technology, which has existed for decades, comes with increased risk of side effects and can take years to develop.

mRNA vaccine technology comes with far decreased risk of side effects and can take mere months to develop.

Make it make sense!

Love these angles.

Drawing this tight space, and making these talking scenes visually dynamic and engaging, that's what it's all about.
Three people in a car, on a drive, in three panels. First we see a young man go 'hmph', then we see the car on the road, then we cut to the side, wherein we see the boy is silent, sitting in a back-seat, while the girl ahead ofi s also similarly silent. He's glancing towards her, as you understand this is a shared moment of deliberate quiet between them. The driver, an older man, thinks to himself 'Damnit Kei, you want her to forgive you? Then ditch the scowl' while a caption box reads 'This is how it went' 5 panel sequence, one's a big wide panel showcasing the interior of a car from the back, as the driver, an old man, and a young man at the back, are talking, discussing why he came on this trip. Then we cut to a side shot of the old man, as he asks the other fella to listen, then we cut to a shot of something delicious in a container of sorts, while the young man looks on in the final panel

We (retroactively) think of the "golden age" of comics as the golden age of *superhero* comics, but what people were actually reading and buying during this period was largely "funny animals", humor (Little Lulu, etc.), westerns, and licensed TV/movie stuff. Look at them Dell sales numbers!
