I see a lot more than “zero” to be honest. The German fiscal change and euro bonds for Ukraine, much of what the Nordics do on defence, FTAs (we are close to EU-Mercosur), new EU budget proposal…

Not enough. Some dead ends. But things are happening, in a bloc of 27. That’s something.
Europe sucking up to Trump as a strategy to buy time might be defendable. But only if that time is being used to make Europe independent and strong. But in the past twelve months there have been exactly zero efforts for a stronger, more integrated Europe. So the sucking up is a waste of time.

This is so perfect. No one have any doubts at this point about what Elon Musk really represents.

Now, with Trump in power and Farage ascendant, its role as a transatlantic power broker is growing.

Yes. Quite a widespread feeling today. I don't believe that these are the base instincts of this nation. Maybe they are for 20% of this nation. By chasing after them, they are losing the 80%.

Alarmists were largely right about Trump, anti-alarmists badly wrong, some sorta admit it, but @polphilpod.bsky.social is unimpressed.

"None could hide their contempt for the alarmists, even in their big ‘my bad’ moments... All of them seemed unable to say what they got wrong."

Commentators who got it wrong wouldn’t listen, won’t learn, and can’t lead.

Politico should not amplify this comment. To be found guilty of embezzlement carries a prison sentence.
Gollnisch, a former member of the EU Parliament for the French far-right National Rally, was found guilty alongside former RN President Marine Le Pen of embezzling funds from the EU institution. When asked about the charges, Gollnisch said: “Jesus Christ also was found guilty and he was innocent.”

Yes. The outcome of the case was that Salvini is acquitted in full. The judgment is expected in 90 days. It is of course a moment of triumph for Salvini. A dangerous time.
December 21, 2024 at 7:47 AM
Yes. Always in favour of Salvini. Today the Italian judges are expected to rule on the kidnapping of the Spanish rescue boat Open Arms and this is the latest of several interventions (I think you can read it in English): www.corriere.it/politica/24_...

I think that it could have been a contributory factor. Of course you are right and we should not judge Biden. It would have been hard not to pardon his son and most people would have acted like him.
December 2, 2024 at 10:10 AM
We get it, yes. But some of us feel heartbroken all over again. No reason why Biden should be heroic in the face of such an outcome. Yet some people are. My first reaction was: now Trump has truly won and decency is truly dead. I am wrong though, because people like Alexei Navalny exist(ed).

Please, read Bill Browder’s books, Red Notice and Freezing Order. They document forensically the murderous Russian regime. The only surprise in this BBC article is that the accused TALKED about killing, but did not carry out the deed. @billbrowder.bsky.social
