This is a strange thing to say but: I’m slowly getting my ability to watch things back. For a very long time now I’ve not been capable of it, not even things I know and love. It just seemed too much effort, too difficult, too hard to hold my attention.

I choose to see this positively.

I’m not an American, so no Thanksgiving, but Christmas this year is going to be a challenge and I’m insistent on making it feel special. So the cats and I will be having roast goose one night and, once that runs out, I have plans for a kangaroo, red wine, and thyme pie.
it fascinates me how most everyone in the U.S. does turkey for Thanksgiving, but we are all over the map as to what we eat for Christmas (as is proper for a hugely diverse nation).

I come from a Christmas prime rib roast family, myself.
I also use the bacon method. Although turkey is Christmas dinner where I come from.

We had our first snow last night and it’s still a novelty, and I had to remind myself I can’t call my parents to tell them about it. Then I nearly put the electric blanket on for Mia, only to remember that she isn’t here any more. If 2025 were a person I would hate them with every ounce of my being.

Kathleen Stock has written an article against "abortion permissiveness". She claims abortion requires "justification" saying the state should limit "unacceptable decision-making" by women about their own bodies.

This is who anti-trans activists proclaim as the feminist thought leaders of our time.

I cleaned out my fridge and I’m getting the robot vacuum cleaner to do his thing. This feels like an incredible achievement and maybe I can justify going to bed.

Marvellous couple of days in beautiful Bamberg for BritCult! Congratulation to @susannegruss.bsky.social and all the organising team for a really great conference, and for reminding me that it was high time I (re)visited Oberfranken!

I’m so happy that @notalawyer.bsky.social is losing his mind over how fucking terrible “Sapiens” is.

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance; tomorrow and Saturday I'm at what promises to be a great queer conference in Bamberg, but today I think I'll be trying to wrangle sense into an article draft that looks at a trans sex worker, other sex workers of ambiguous gender identity, and a crime that wasn't.

I wonder if the LMU presidium is capable of shame. Evidently not if this is any reflection.
The LMU announces the cancellation of a seminar on the topic "the targeting of Palestinian academia". The cancellation announcement is titled "LMU as a place of pluralistic discourse". Couldn't make this up.

No photos, but it was my pleasure yesterday to introduce my friend and compatriot @kilderbenhauser.bsky.social and his research at the Global History colloquium of the FU Berlin. I keep saying “it’s nice to see Matt again” but I’m pretty sure at this point he thinks he’ll never get rid of me.

Gosh I love my historian pals. 💜
Historian pals: looking for some reading recommendations on post-1945 sex work in England and, particularly, London — both in terms of its actual conduct as well as campaigns against it, including by police. Particularly late 1950s-early 1960s!

There is literally no justification for the existence of the Labour Party at this point.

For Shabana Mahmood to attack some of the most cruelly treated people in the world as having won a "golden ticket" because they manage to get to and claim asylum in Britain is unforgiveable.

A new, far right, low for which I can think of no precedent, by any UK Government.

We do not need yet more post facto diagnoses of Adolf Hitler. Such things have been happening since the 1940s and historians — real ones, not the ones who write Father’s Day pulp — put no stock in them, because as explanatory devices they tell us, in the technical jargon of my discipline, fuck all.

All this is bad enough but I'm honestly seething at the cover designs of all of them, which make Auschwitz seem like a Very Dreamy Place, a romanticised fantasy land.

As all this disgusting Epstein shit starts surfacing more and more, I hope we don't lose sight of the fact that apparently every major media outlet knew everything and instead spent their time money and energy attacking the trans community.
