Guess I'll do a quick intro...

Hey, I'm Marche. Been in localization for a few years now. I work primarily as a J-E editor, but I dabble in writing and QA here and there too!

When I'm not working, I'm usually playing entirely too much FFXIV and seeking new creative outlets/sources of inspiration!
Demons Roots, the best RPG Maker game you've probably never played, which I had the privilege of serving as the editor on! Mushoku Tensei: Quest of Memories, my first foray into working on an entry in a popular series! This was an especially fun and challenging project, so if you like dungeon crawlers, please check it out! Living with Sister: Monochrome Fantasy, another game I edited! I haven't gotten a chance to play it myself yet, but I am COMPLETELY taken with its art style. One of my QA projects, Animal Trail ☆ Girlish Square 2! Kumi is the beary best and I will not entertain any arguments to the contrary.

CUTENESS OVERLOAD! I love how fuzzy they made Laylee! 😭

Finished the Arkveld EX grind today and finished the new deep dungeon with my girlfriend. Today was a great day. 😌 Feeling extremely accomplished!

Going to finish getting my 50 kills today for the mount. What a pleasant surprise this extreme has been. I was honestly kind of dreading it after how much this patch's /other/ extreme burned me out, but this has been super fun and refreshing. Same goes for Pilgrim's Traverse, too. Great patch.

Sheesh, what a lucky run this was. Don't let anyone ever tell you getting a high funny number is a matter of skill. Yes, there is /some/ skill involved, but it's more luck than anything. Pretty sure this is the pull where we killed Arkveld /right/ as I got off the last big ability from my burst.

Also cleared Pilgrim's Traverse with my static today, and we got 99/99 aetherpool. Should be jumping into Quantum tomorrow. Judging by the clear vods I've seen, it doesn't look /too/ crazy. I'm thinking we should be able to knock it out by the end of next week.

I'm 12 clears into The Windward Wilds (Extreme), and I can't believe I'm saying this, but this just might be my favorite extreme in the entire expansion. Super fun and dynamic fight that, while not /too/ challenging, constantly keeps you on your toes. Stunning arena and music, too. Great stuff.

Didn't manage to snag a room at the Gaylord this year (none of my oomfs did), but I put down a reservation for a nice room at the Hilton in Alexandria, so I'm still gonna be MAG-ing it up in style. 👀

Now to start counting down the days...

Finished the Cosmic Exploration grind earlier tonight with my girlfriend. We synced it up so that we both got our final achievements at the same time.

Bring on the next challenge! 😤

I feel so validated for putting in the painstaking effort to build and curate my 4,600+ song library (all MP3s/FLACs) over the past decade.

Enshittification comes for /everything/. Own what you can. Keep local copies of what you can. Don't let them take the things you're passionate about from you.

your imaginary friend who uses too much electricity is now also annoying

I hate subscription services so much, man. Lol

Enshittification of Game Pass was inevitable, but even I didn't expect it to happen quite /this/ soon, when the Xbox brand was already underwater. Yeesh.

Wow, that is some of the worst compression I've seen in a long time. Thanks, Bluesky.

Started playing Ace Attorney Investigations with my girlfriend tonight, and she /loves/ cranking up the sexual tension between Edgeworth and Gumshoe, so I made this Discord sticker for us. Lol

Maybe I'm overthinking all of this and I couldn't be more wrong, but hey, I'm super passionate about video game music, so this stuff's right up my alley. It's been fun to think about, if nothing else. 😅

I think that's where a lot of this comes from. The most exciting composers I know of today are the ones who are carrying the torch, so to speak. They totally immersed themselves in the weird from a young age and are now making stuff that's just as exciting and out-there, if not more so.

There's a /massive/ difference between someone who grew up playing Sonic games and retro RPGs—stuff with really experimental and groundbreaking music for its time—versus, say, a musician who worked primarily in TV and film before proceeding to compose for AAA video games.
marche100.bsky.social
Consider the following questions: What /makes/ a composer? What decides their sound?

Naturally, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to these, but two key factors are undeniably the music they surround themselves with and the sorts of projects they're assigned (or pursue, if they're freelance).
marche100.bsky.social
A lot of the weird, innovative indie soundtracks that come to mind are from Western composers, while the best AA/AAA soundtracks are from Japanese and European composers. There's an interesting divide there, one that I believe can be at least partially explained with a bit of thought...
marche100.bsky.social
Games like Ace Combat 7, Sonic Frontiers, Splatoon 3: Side Order, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, and (I'm told; haven't played it yet) Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 go to some /really/ weird and exciting places with their soundtracks.

...Though this leads me to an interesting observation!
marche100.bsky.social
Uematsu's been saying this for years, and while I generally agree with the sentiment (I do not care for Hollywood-esque soundtracks that have become typical of many Western games, especially in the AAA sphere), I think there's still a lot of great stuff out there—even outside the indie scene!
