The National Institute of Aging made half as many new R01 awards (primary mechanism for funding) in FY25 than in FY24. This is devastating for younger scholars who study aging. Many newly hired faculty/researchers now face an uphill battle to keep their careers.

1- When should blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease be used?

According to this Alzheimer's Association Clinical Practice Guideline:

- after a comprehensive clinical evaluation
- after considering if pretest probability of AD warrants use

our system is so hard to navigate that its not just a barrier for poor people without insurance -- although they will be hit the hardest -- it's a barrier for everyone

im a physician with great insurance and itd still be a headache for me to get a rx, just 1-5 more layers of friction to a a chore

ACIP WG chair Levi is suggesting that Covid vaccine be prescribed. The need for prescriptions for vaccines just causes barriers to poor people without insurance. A population that will just increase with Medicaid being gutted.

Bizarre recommendation. ACIP said young kids shouldn’t get MMRV combo vaccine, but they can if parents want it & it’s the recommended option for low-income kids who use the Vaccines for Children program.🤷🏼‍♀️

When we say the NIH is becoming politicized, this is a great example. NIH staff are not allowed to attend a scientific meeting (where they engage w/ scientists in their grant portfolios) because a deeply politicized DOJ is trying to use its power to squash even the remote appearance of dissent.

NEW: Per multiple sources, NIH staff have been told that "DOJ has advised" that they "should NOT" attend the American Public Health Association annual meeting, which is taking place in far-off, uh, Washington DC November 2-5.
