My son is 14 now and watched that film so much as a small boy. Phrases from it frequently get stuck in my head to this day and I will spend hours trying to work out where they’re from.

Interesting article on RG universities taking more students to increase income. My daughter is in the second year of a law degree at a RG university. She’s had minimal work marked, less tutor time than advertised & only had exams in the summer term, no lectures. She came home in April.

Finally, an article that at least touches on teaching quality and staff workload issues. Not that it suggests any viable alternatives to the current state of play. (And for 'colleges' in the headline, read 'universities', a telling choice of nomenclature.

Plain dress and a distinctive hat. This painting shows Jonathan Backhouse, a Quaker banker, in 1819
A painting showing a coach with 4 horses racing past the toll house at Croft bridge in Darlington. A man, Jonathan Backhouse, leans out of the coach, wearing a distinctive black wide-brimmed hat.

Very timely and interesting statement from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Particularly interesting re my own work, but also to those who want to know just what the hell is going on.

Beyond the flags: grief, polarisation and the work of repair
Amid grief, rage and division, there are seeds of hope and repair to be found in the North East. But they will not flourish if we stay silent.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. Engaging, thought-provoking, informative with a warmth and lightness of touch that delights. The book is definitely going on my Christmas list.

Just finished listening to the first episode of #AHistoryOfEnglandIn25Poems. Did they play me out with Elgar's Nimrod? Of course they did! Broadcast every day this week at 11.45 (repeated at half past midnight) + on BBC Sounds: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand...

Not only are they ridiculous but also actively unhelpful for getting an idea of what the dress really looks like.

I honestly think people have completely forgotten the art of compromising. Too often it seems to be seen as a negative, but it really is essential for getting through life.

We’ve transcribed it and I’m very happy to share that, email [email protected] and I’ll send it. We’ve identified the bankers, and I think Chris Lloyd at The Northern Echo has done some research. Your conservators did an excellent job!

The 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway gives me a chance to shine a spotlight on this amazing document - the subscription deed for the railway. Held by Barclays because one of our early bankers was Treasurer to the railway (continues)

10 years ago, to mark the 40th anniversary of the climb, I got to meet many of the climbers at a series of events. Genuinely one of the stand-out moments of my career.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest via the south west face. The expedition was led by Chris Bonington and sponsored by Barclays, which is why we have this splendid flag in the archives.
A flag, based loosely on a quarter of the union flag. It is split diagonally by a red and white stripe. Above the stripe is a dark blue ground featuring a red silhouette of a climber. Below the stripe is a sky blue ground with an heraldic white spread eagle bearing 3 crowns on its chest and wings (the logo of Barclays Bank).

The glamour of working in archives - I find myself in a service lift. My favourite bit was when I got out, pushed open a door and emerged from what looked like a wall!
Inside a service lift. It is bigger than a normal lift, with many illuminated buttons for selecting a floor. The walls are bare wood with many scratches and chips, and a random splodge of blue paint.

Being in receipt of a glut of damsons, I thought I’d try my hand at making chutney. Covering half the kitchen in vinegar was not part of the plan. Chutney now underway. Is the smell of the chutney masking the smell of vinegar?
