8. "Another Girl, Another Planet" by The Only Ones

They'd maybe hate the comparison, but this is like the Steely Dan of New Wave. The conception is brilliant, the execution flawless. An air guitarist's dream.

your avi: me at the end of portobello prom when i was starting to feel strong again after a bit of a surprise gall bladder removal last summer
Your avi: a scruffy road sign at Gilmore Place, Edinburgh which has been heavily stickered and defaced.

I watched the film Jay Kelly last night. I'm indifferent to Clooney but I liked the central idea and it felt like a film for adults. It looks gorgeous too. Shot on 35mm, it says on Wiki, so maybe that's why.

Remember folks: if you have any small amount of artistic talent, any sex appeal, or can make your friends laugh, the richest man on earth is crying screaming throwing up because he can’t be you.

Went to see my friend's community musical theatre group's xmas show. A couple did Fairytale of New York in a way that got that song to land with me like it never has before. Lovely experience.

6. "I Can't Stand The Rain" by Eruption feat. Precious Wilson

Frank Farian did oversee quite a lot of lip-synching but he also put together some outstanding songs and singers. And I love the silky pulse of the bassline in this.

I don't use Spotify at all for music listening. My band's still on it. Never earned a penny, altho not surprising as we have almost no following. But bookers still expect it, so the more ppl don't use it, the closer we get to the balance tipping and it'll be ok, or even good, to not be on it.

As part of downsizing, i've come across my diaries from 1995-97. There's scarcely a day that doesn't have 'Phone [person] about [arrangement]' on it. So when I wonder how we lived before mobiles, I should look at these. It's all there and it's simple: landlines and answering machines/flatmates.

3. "She's Gone" by Bob Marley and the Wailers

I bloody loved the Kaya album and this is my favourite track. Looking it up now, I see Important Men in the music press thought it a bit shite. Can't express my lack of surprise at this correlation.

I bought Horses bc a girl I had a crush on at school was carrying it around under her arm (as you did). Couldn't fathom it, but then Easter came out, and I've loved this song, and Patti, ever since.

Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.
