A wonderful side effect of awarding Machado the Nobel Peace Prize is that she is a Venezuelan opposition leader, fighting tyranny.

Since Trump also opposes the Venezuelan gov’t, he can hardly diss her, can he? Of course, he will anyway.

This op ed gives insight into why people fight to avoid cognitive dissonance. It’s because they want to hold onto their tribe, which was, and is, a great human strength.

But we’re also intelligent, so we can and do override our instincts when we need to.

And today we most definitely need to.

I’ve read all of his works, I think, and it’s one of his best early works. BTW, Scudder first appeared in For Us, the Living, which was first published posthumously. In it, Scudder lost.
