"The Cultivation of Purpose"

Two 9" x 12" pages done on watercolor paper with a mix of sumi ink, watercolors, and airbrushed acrylics.

I wrote these pages a few years ago, and am happy to finally share them with you.

Watercolor comic page: Opening on a close up shot of a red rose in a dimly lit flag stone room. A pair of shears comes up and prunes the blossom from the plant, revealing a young woman with red hair and a dim blue dress. She asks, "What are you doing" to the gardener. Said gardener is a woman in a fine black dress with pearl buttons. Her fingernails are long and sharp like the thorns of the rose bush she is attending. She responds with a voice similar to that of her aged shears, "In order to properly cultivate a plant such as this, one must see to the removal of diseased material... Lest the rot spreads". She punctuates this with the sharp removal of another bud. "But," the young woman responds looking to a rose at the gardeners feet, "You're only removing the blossoms. Why grow roses only to prune their beauty?"

2nd page of a watercolor comic; The gardeners response almost shocks the young woman. "Oh, you poor, misguided, thing. Beauty IS the rot." we now look closely at a thick bramble of thorns as the woman continues in her rusty shear voice, then move out to show her identity. Standing before a massive rose bramble with thorns of unnatural length is a Sister of the Ever-Sharpening Blade. A dingy silk cloth laid over a face hidden to the outside world with long, sharp, protrusions poking out of an unnaturally tall head. In the glowing light she says, "What I cultivate... is purpose...".

Long Horse is the creation of Trevor Henderson.

"I kept my light off for as long as I could to try and preserve my night vision, but then I heard something keeping pace with me. It could probably see me, but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. It sounded like... someone dragging a carpet through the dried leaves? But as though it was constricting around me, and the only path to safety was the one that I had come from. There was something else. Something under the sounds of dried leaves and snapping twigs. A hollow clattering sound, like, a bamboo windchime. It just got louder and louder but stayed so quiet? I panicked, and turned on my light. The trees illuminated like street signs, and the carpet of leaves faded into static. It took me a moment, but then I saw it. It was pale, and almost translucent, with thin, white, skin. And all down it's back was a mane of stringy, black, hair. It was impossibly long, and draped over the canopy of tree branches above me. There was no way to tell where it started, but, in the gloom, just out of my lights reach, was it's head. Skull-like, with no eyes to be seen, and grotesquely elongated. Like the skull of a horse. I ran."

Officially finished outlining chapter 2 (chapter 1 in the book). The current page count is 114.

An enormous pack of black wolves, snarling and sinewous, surrounds Harker's calèche. The horses panic as they start to howl

Harker panics and starts slapping the side of the calèche to get the driver's attention, not knowing where he went. Harker is shocked to see him appear in front of the pack. He sticks out a hand and swings in aside.

The wolves grow quiet, and make a path for the driver.

Harker watches in disbelief, but the moon is obscured by clouds and his vision lessens

Commission for @plante.bsky.social of his son and pup in scary sheets. This was a wonderful study to do that helped me unlock a strong storybook vibe!

A child in a sheet ghost costume and straw kitty hat tries to desperately keep his costume as his dog pulls on it happily. They are in a forest that is bright and cheerful.

Somewhere, in the Deep reaches of space, an assembly has gathered on a space station. During a heated discussion on the design and capabilities of mecha, Isamu Kurogane (Lance) stands tall and dares to speak the truth. "Every Gundam is worse than Voltron because his hands are lion mouths!!!" he declares without shame. His bravado has impressed the Red Comet, Char Aznable, while confusing and insulting Amuro Ray. The delaration is heard to mixed reactions by many other mecha pilots (not by Shinji Ikari, he is doing his best to ignore him).
