Given the choice between reading a book and sitting in silence, 3 out of 4 students in an hour long detention tonight have chosen silence.

I can't begin to understand them.

They even have the book out in front of them.

Automated processes only really help if you have a half decent understanding of how to do it yourself the long way around.

This is true whether we're talking about grabbing a calculator, or using an AI LLM.

Assessment for learning should be a compass, not the destination. Its purpose is to guide teaching, not replace it.

Just got home after taking a team of wonderful students to the senior team maths challenge.

They were brilliant, despite their reservations about being in a private school venue, surrounded by a bunch of private school students.

I forget how daunting that must be, and I'm really proud of them!

Had a bizarre conversation with a colleague today sparked by me losing my voice.

They told us of the time during their teacher training when they were asked by their mentor to teach an entire lesson without speaking.

All was communicated through gesture and silent board work.

Bonkers.

One thing I love about @bennewmark.bsky.social is his absolute certainty that people can be better, given half a chance.

Out of this unpleasant experience comes a lesson, not condemnation.

An opportunity to grow outward in hope and love, not shrink inward into regret and anger.

Been off today feeling super rough, but I'm doing a little better tonight.

Trouble is, I have two hours with year 9 tomorrow, which I'm pretty certain will completely destroy any voice I have left even if I am feeling well enough to go in...

This is very exciting!

Children of Time was exceptional, and I'm half way through Children of Ruin at the moment, it's a little slower going because it's somewhat more traumatic (in a good way)!

Definitely glad to have more to look forward to in this universe 😁

What a wonderfully depressing story.

I hope it's resolved quickly and the company that have deliberately exploited a vulnerable group of children suffer some form of consequence.

I grow so weary of reading "financial advice" which essentially amounts to "gamble your money irresponsibly on things which harm both the poor and the environment".

I do by school policy, but only because I teach in a computer room.

A thought experiment:

What if we could augment our imperfect memory by perfectly encoding our experiences digitally, and then using LLM technology to query those digital archives?

No external influence, just a way of accessing a more reliable version of our memory?

If someone tells you X will revolutionise teaching, they are lying to you, and most likely trying to sell you something.

So here's a question that's probably mostly for primary colleagues.

How do you help children to get to grips with one to one correspondence?

Is this something that's actively taught, or is it more about setting up activities where it's involved and allowing it to develop naturally?
