This is the importance of buying the books we write and teach from university presses. The same administrations that don’t care about the humanities would be just as happy to have academic publishing handled by these companies. We can save our own publishing ecosystem- but we have to do it.
"academic publishing is dominated by profit-oriented, multinational companies for whom scientific knowledge is a commodity to be sold back to the academic community who created it... The dominant four collectively generated... $12 billion in profits between 2019 and 2024."

I'm really excited about this episode, Stardusts! It is a continuation of an awesome conversation catalyzed by the incredible @chanda.blacksky.app that began IRL at the STLV TREKtivism panel. We talk about how The #StarTrek future is fundamentally incompatible with capitalism.

"Robo Cimone" started as a Halloween costume in Uni but lived on to make appearances at other events on campus. I spent 80 dollars in material to save 2 dollars on the campus Halloween party if you showed up in costume. The battery back was 25lbs lol. Still my fav costume. 🤖

It is absolutely vital that we read books & stories from cultures & communities not our own, but while we're retraining our brains to read/think with real depth, we might want to rethink HOW we read those other stories. Bad Indians Book Club explores that exact space...
Bad Indians Book Club: Reading at the Edge of a Thousand Worlds
In this powerful reframing of the stories that make us, Anishinaabe writer Patty Krawec leads us into the borderlands of history, science, memoir, and fiction to ask: What worlds do books written by marginalized people describe and invite us to inhabit? When a friend asked what books could help them understand Indigenous lives, Patty Krawec, author of Becoming Kin, gave them a list. This list became a book club and then a podcast about a year of Indigenous reading, and then this book. The writers in Bad Indians Book Club refuse to let dominant stories displace their own and resist the way wemitigoozhiwag--European settlers--craft the prevailing narrative and decide who they are.
