Peter Francis closes with an apology: to the dead children's families, to the entire Lawrence family and campaign including Sir Duane Brookes, to all black justice campaigners, to all activists, to "the women I had sex with in my deployment... I shouldn't have done it." #spycops

Peter Francis to the media: "I have no intention of adding anything... till the final report - no more media contact." #spycops

Peter Francis: "I didn't expect 15 years later to be the only whistleblower... but as the only whistleblower I felt it was my duty to stay the course." He does not enjoy his "Z10 celebrity status" #spycops

Peter Francis described "dodgy conservations" in Bob Lambert's garden on "anything too secret to be discussed in the office," - on "McPherson" (the Lawrence Inquiry), Peter's own "extraction plan" and South East Regional Crime squad being bugged by "Ghost Squad" #spycops

Peter Francis said that Bob Lambert was not a mason, but that he was told by Bob that "the black balls exceeded the white balls" re: Peter attending the SDS reunion - only 2 managers (Lambert was one) wanted Peter to go. Peter was seen as "disloyal." #spycops

Peter Francis says there was an "containment exercise" exercise around him from Sept. 1999 run by Bob Lambert, which began when Peter reported sick. #spycops
December 4, 2025 at 3:21 PM
Peter Francis had "zero after-care" following his SDS deployment. There was an Army psychiatrist "punishment counsellor" that officers were sent to if they overstepped boundaries, but there seemed to be no way for officers to voluntarily approach a counsellor. #spycops

When Peter Francis joined the SDS, there were warnings around the threat to the security of the unit from Helen Steel's persistent tracking down of John Dines, but threat was not enough to implement the "contingency plan." #spycops
December 4, 2025 at 3:17 PM
There was an SDS "contingency plan" if "things when wrong" with the security of the unit. Flats would have been abandoned, meetings would be stopped at certain venues. #spycops

Peter Francis on an SDS colleague's undercover deployment: "The SWP - Bless! - that's one of the easiest organisations to join."
December 4, 2025 at 12:16 PM
Peter Francis carried on sending postcards to activist friends while on a family holiday in Spain to maintain the fiction that he was leaving London activists circles and travelling towards Greece as part of his undercover deployment ending. #spycops
December 4, 2025 at 12:13 PM
Peter Francis said he had an extensive knowledge of the SDS and its officers because he was one those sending out the invitations to its 25th anniversary reunion party and because he was a "nosy intelligence gatherer" he asked as he was sending these out, "Oh, who's that then?" #spycops
December 4, 2025 at 12:11 PM
Peter Francis when the Lawrence Inquiry was announced, didn't realise at the time how much capacity Public Inquiries had for "secrecy" - he says he knows that now! #spycops
December 4, 2025 at 10:56 AM
SDS undercovers were "forbidden" to meet in "the Yard" (Scotland Yard). If Peter Francis wanted to discuss his fears of his cover being blown, he would have to meet "the Super" at the safe house or at Bob Lambert's house. #spycops
December 4, 2025 at 10:49 AM
When the Lawrence Inquiry was announced, Peter Francis feared his cover - and Trevor Morris's - would be blown. He discussed it with Keith Edmonson & Bob Lambert, Bob assured him that "nothing on the SDS" would come out. Not satisfied with their answers, he tried to speak to the "Super."#spycops

Peter Francis giving evidence on his deployment as an undercover officer with the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS): "I started to feel that looking after me was not as important as looking after the SDS." #spycops

I am at the Undercover Policing Inquiry @UCPI.bsky.social today, for what is scheduled to be the last of four days of testimony from Peter Francis, the only undercover officer we know of who became a whistleblower. Updates from @spycopsbot.bsky.social

Peter Francis: SDS believed that "somebody in the extreme left" was running the Stephen Lawrence campaign, there was "disbelief" that the family itself could be running it. SDS had a "Reds under the beds" mentality, a fantasy that "Communists" or "Trotskyites" were behind the campaign. #spycops
December 1, 2025 at 4:04 PM
Peter Francis was told they would have "no trouble" getting stories undermining Stephen Lawrence campaigns and other family justice campaigns "into the media" and he was aware of another example where this had already worked. #spycops
December 1, 2025 at 3:39 PM
Peter Francis was used to being issued a gun and to be able to drive through red lights when he was a uniformed police officer, so he assumed the "criminality" when he joined the SDS - getting away with assault - was covered by some similar sort of proper regulatory framework too. #spycops
December 1, 2025 at 3:24 PM
Chair Sir John Mitting halted the Inquiry due to inadvertent breach of Restriction Order. Proceedings have now resumed. Peter Francis, giving evidence, commented, "I've no idea what I just said." The Chair assured him he can't be expected to know what it was that he said that breached the Order.
December 1, 2025 at 12:37 PM
Peter Francis joined the Met in 1986 as a uniformed officer, he saw a "noticeable jump" in the level of racism among officers when he transferred to a level 2 public order support unit. This was not challenged - "shamefully not by me" - and not by colleagues either.
December 1, 2025 at 11:23 AM
Peter Francis described 2 SDS "field trips" to Amsterdam, said the 1st such trip was Keith Edmonson's idea and was before January 1997. Francis and SDS colleagues went to "coffeeshops", had "cannabis cakes" and toured the red light district. Also 2 SDS trips to Dieppe. #spycops

"Promiscuity" within left-wing circles was given as a reason in discussions with managers and fellow officers why undercovers might find themselves in sexual relationships while undercover according to Peter Francis. #spycops
December 1, 2025 at 10:52 AM
Peter Francis on advice given by managers on undercovers having sex while undercover - at no point was consideration given to the women involved. It was just about covering the officers, avoiding pregnancy and its consequences. #spycops
