This is very exciting news and I honestly can't think of anyone better placed to take on Reform, including their candidate's nonsense claims about there being an out-of-touch "new elite" with leftist, progressive values.
Say hello to Hannah Spencer—councillor, plumber, greyhound lover and your Green Party candidate for Gorton and Denton 💚

I've been unwell for almost all of January, which feels ironic given that I'm still editing tomorrow's Intro to the Sociology of Health and Illness slides. Perhaps I should make it a class discussion: Is your lecturer suffering from the effects of post-viral fatigue or marketised higher education? 🤔

The right/far right always bleat endlessly about "free speech" but they only mean free speech for people like them. For everyone else they censor, de-platform, silence and otherwise proscribe.

The University of Arkansas's law school just withdrew the appointment of its new dean six days after hiring her because conservative politicians complained that she filed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of transgender students

Significant public presence here at @oxfordcitycouncil.bsky.social where a special meeting of Full Council will debate whether to go ahead with 2026 elections. I believe we should and that anything else is democratic backsliding.

Really good summary of the Oxford City Council special council meeting tonight. I, like many other councillors, am very disappointed that councillors were not given a chance to vote on the prospect of cancelling May's elections. But a clear majority of councilors spoke against cancellation tonight.
Good evening! It’s Oxford City Council’s special meeting to discuss (but not actually decide…) whether to stage elections this year. Usually this wouldn’t be up for debate, of course, but the Government has raised the option given the impending local government reorganisation.

OCC's Labour leader has refused to rule out cancelling this year's elections. Voters across Oxford deserve a say, and local elections MUST go ahead in 2026 for the people's voice to be heard.

“What do we call it when a stronger person decides to rob a weaker person because he can? It is just gangsterism. We are the most dangerous gangsters in the world today… We are the bad guys.”

This situation is made worse by “democracy championing” countries who do not call out US authoritarianism.

This is a holiday reminder that you do not owe emotional labour or intimacy to people just because they’re biologically related to you. Spend time with those who nourish you and separate from those who degrade your existence. Today and every day.

I was glad to present on a panel with @hannems.bsky.social and @rosadluxe.bsky.social for International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers at St Anne's Church in Soho earlier, with excellent audience engagement, a collaborative event to challenge the harms of criminalisation and stigmatisation.

Laws that criminalise sex work don’t prevent sex work, they just make it more difficult for sex workers to work safely.
