edmund mcmillen is currently unwittingly part of a truman show style experiment where he's locked in a white room with a computer that only has access to 2012 9gag and a pirated copy of macromedia flash so it's actually very rude to make fun of his humor

RIP Robert Tinney (November 22, 1947 – February 1, 2026), the artist famous for his playful covers for Byte magazine, a hobbist magazine that ushered in the microcomputing age from the mid-70s through the 90s. I'm honored to have included his work in my own art collection.

Get ready to see a LOT of live-service games that started development in 2020-2021 ship after 5-7 years of dev and crash and burn immediately. I mean a LOT, I would even say it will probably be the defining trend of 2026-2027.
tbh I’d bet the fatal decision making here happened back when interest rates went up in 2022 and sunk cost fallacy is the only reason they shipped.
it's insane to me as someone who watched the live service model grow into what it is today that these kinds of games aren't even given a month to live and potentially grow and gain and audience when something like league or fortnite didn't blow up overnight.

i think it's also worth mentioning that consumer trust has been slowly eroded away over the years re: live service. you saw it happening w/ JP mobile games over the past decade. a game comes out. closes three months later. consumers won't spend on battle passes, micro-transactions, etc.

One of Vanillaware's co-founders (Takehiro Shiga) drew this cool illustration depicting the structure of Chunsoft's most famous sound novels. This was posted around the time 13 Sentinels was entering production, so the devs may have been studying these sound novels while conceptualizing the game.

Obviously the closing point about how gamification makes the divide between work and the rest of life slippery is the big important takeaway here, but also, lol, lmao, i simply love to read about the gamer's grotesque urge.

YU-NO absolutely unlocked my brain the same way Dokyusei did for every game with adventure-social-sim elements.

playing YU-NO in 2026 is the process of realizing that nearly every impressively complex metaphysical/interdimensional anime game of the past 30 years is copying its test answers. Xenogears, Death Stranding 2, Xenoblade 1/3 all quote it nearly verbatim

Pour one out for Y3 Remastered. Yakuza 3 is flawed for sure but there's so much heart in that original game - and the work we were able to do in making Y3R the dad game it always deserved to be is something I will forever be proud of 🥹

(it's also not-so-secretly one of my favorites in the series)

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.

LRT: I have been unable to use Outlook at work for 2 days because my .pst is on OneDrive and Microsoft broke that and IT hasn’t rolled out the KB fix yet, so. Ultimately had to migrate the .pst to a local drive to get Outlook to stop crashing.
