The 'direct, specific and distinctive' is specifically why it reminds me of that tumblr post so much I guess
Tumblr post by user spookyoboro: my favorite thing about the title ‘teenage mutant ninja turtles’ is how every word throws you a new curveball Tumblr post by user spookyoboro: like, teenage? Solid starting point. Popular protagonist demographic. I can understand that. Suddenly hard left into ‘mutant’ and oh shit that’s wild are we going into xmen territory here? How are they gonna play this? Let’s wait and s- ninjas? Yo this can’t possibly get cooler ninjas are wild right? And then suddenly they end with ‘turtles’ and your hopes and dreams don’t know what to do anymore and your entire worldview has been shattered. Good title.

I think it's the combination of the WTH of it all and the starting 'Remarkably' that makes it pop

lil sticker design for ECN this year, trying to retain design consistency with last year's stickers but also needed to add little gumboots and a tiny oatmilk latte
sticker design for a bug professionals conference, featuring an iconic beetle of the PNW (a rain beetle, Pleocomidae) in front of a generically Portland-like backdrop. I know that's not a perfect Mt Hood but at least I didn't just draw Mt Rainier like I always do photo of last year's sticker, an Eleodes in front of a generically Sonoran desert landscape (for the same conference but in Phoenix)

I have so many questions on my mind and they're all variations of "where can I get this?"
mdahirel.bsky.social
I was thinking there had to be membracids doing weird mimic stuff with their weird pronotum, and a quick search gave me a couple potential candidates: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heteron... + www.researchgate.net/publication/...
Heteronotus nodosus - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org

I *think* I got the why! It's a 'in which order are we grouping them' thing! (plot1|map1)/(plot2|map2) also works
mdahirel.bsky.social
I might! I'm tired so I'm struggling a little to understand *why* it works when (plot1/plot2)|(map1/map2) doesn't, but playing with plot_layout does: (plot1+map1+plot2+map2) + plot_layout(ncol=2,nrow=2) for instance

(unless I'm so tired I didn't get your question right)
A patchwork of 2 random plots and 2 random maps. The limits of the map panels are not aligned with the plot panels. A patchwork of 2 random plots and 2 random maps. The maps and the plots are aligned!

Some of these sound like honorifics you'd give members of some weird parliament

There are 13 birds with "Least" in the common name and none with "Most".

This seems to be an oversight.

We just need to fund people to find @rosemarymosco.com 's Most Bittern

I've literally just bookmarked it because I was like, I need to read it more deeply later to really think about I could do with all that

just posted it in the lab group chat to break more brains

It's one of the these where if I had a teaching position rn I would be adding this wherever I can so fast, just for the opportunity to see all these brains break in real time

One of my main snail models and what looks like one of my main spider models? On the same 17th century painting? #InverteFest

(Flowers in a Glass Bottle on a Marble Plinth, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, about 1670, National Gallery, London www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/ja...)
A detail of the bottom part of an old painting. We can see a glass bottle on a plinth, with the stems of flowers visible in the bottle, and some fruits and flowers visible around the bottle. But more importantly, on the plinth, there is also a bumblebee, a grove snail, and what looks like a cross spider (and is at least definitely an Araneus)

In addition, @youn-henry.drosophila.social.ap.brid.gy also happens to be a very talented illustrator and artist (more, including lots of stuff of interest to the #InverteFest crowd, at jesuisunstegosaure.artstation.com)
A watercolor illustration showing a parasitoid wasp on some bramble, probing cutesy little green aphids passing by to see which ones she's gonna lay eggs in. There's one aphid that looks very brown and dead: it's a "mummy", there's a parasitoid developing in it! The background is full of very detailed greenery; there's a couple bugs hidden in it, including a caterpillar munching on a leaf

In continued #InverteFest published paper catchup: Sometimes I work on inverts that are not snails or spiders! Like here, where I used my Computer Swearer-At skills to help a friend analyse an experiment with aphids attacked by parasitoid wasps, to see when aphid symbionts help protect them vs not

same model for about the same length of time (but first hand): can confirm that it's still great, and the 0 changes in functionality. It sometimes gets stuck, but nothing a forced restart can't solve.

I was literally explaining this to a couple of friends a few days ago, so: these upper tentacles are what the larger group making up the overwhelming majority of land snails and slugs is named after: Stylommatophora, roughly "wearing eye on stalk" #InverteFest
restingdinoface.bsky.social
What lovely tentacles you have!

The upper tentacles of snails house the eyes, but even more important is the lower pair. The tentacles closet to the ground are their sniffers, picking up olfactory cues. #InvertFest
