My specialty is taking the talk-heavy instructional routines that work so well in K-8 math and using them in K-8 computer science (where they are an absolute *revelation*). My #NCTM session is a hands-on tour of those. I love showing math teachers (often CS-adjacent) how well they work. 🤓

Today, a question came up with a group of organizers I’m working with, some of whom are also lawyers, and it’s a serious inquiry:

Is anyone undertaking an effort to collect evidence that could eventually be used in a Nuremberg-style set of trials, or for a truth and reconciliation commission?

Everyone talks about how generative AI helps students. Almost no one asks how it might hurt them. We reviewed 224 papers on GenAI in computing education to see what’s being ignored.

Here’s what we found at the @templehci.bsky.social👇

Umbrella harms (e.g., Metacognitive) are bolded and represent the total number of instances across all associated sub-harms. Because sub-harms are not mutually exclusive, a single paper may be counted multiple times within an umbrella category if it includes multiple sub-harms with the same type of evidence.

My undergraduates (middle school math methods) would like advice and insights for teachers' interactions with parents. Teachers or teacher educators, what advice or ideas would you give to these future teachers?

Great prompt. For me: (1). Teases apart (PK) solid teachers w/o this subject knowledge, (CK) experts in the subject who don't have teaching skill, and (PCK) folks who know the subject *and* how to sequence & teach it.
I bet the sizes vary by subject, though. Would love to see your Ss depict that. 🤔

You are explaining history of math education to a new teacher. What significant events, publications, background do you include?

E.g.:
1920 - NCTM Founded
1957 - Sputnik
1958 - New Math
1973 - Why Johnny can't add
1981 - MAA report on recs
2010 - CC standards

Hey friends! Little tech help, please? A highly specific ask. I understand that MathType equations in a Word document can be re-rendered in LaTeX in order to export for another medium (say google docs).

But I don't have access to either Word or MathType.

Do you guys ever look at a drawing in progress and simply feel so overwhelmed by the amount of work left that it paralyzes you?

Anyways I'm 65 hours into a piece and have not yet completed the drawing step. Realizing there is a reason I put this idea off for 11 years 🙃

I've been collecting articles on the negative productivity impacts of "AI" for a while, and Philipp Markolin finally got me to gather them up and write a post about them. This is mostly about the productivity claims for "AI;" the technology has other problems, but I'm not addressing them in the post

My teen boys have never understood why I hate/mistrust Mr Beast. I didn’t see this specific stunt coming, but I always felt uneasy about him.

Sensationalism, always threatening into veer into real danger, just for clicks and laughs. And a side of philanthropy to absolve it.

Nope nope nope.
nycsouthpaw.bsky.social
Content creators tend to think any spectacle is defensible if they can say health and safety concerns have been attended to behind the scenes, but that’s not really it imho. Mr. Beast’s whole thing is that his subjects’ desperation for cash allows him—a wealthier person—to indulge his sadism.

This blew up, if you're curious obviously we had ventilation for the smoke and a kill switch to cut off the fires. We had professionals test this extensively and the guy in the video as stated is a professional stunt man. I take safety more serious than you could ever imagine.

This is meaningful public gesture for Truth & Reconciliation Day.

But… er… crosses? 😳😠

I’d be incandescent with rage if *my* child were stolen from me and my community, their culture neutered, and the tribute was a field of thief’s own preferred grave marker.
