Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

So what are the bottom lines?

First, a HUGE thank you to NIH staff (particularly grants management specialists but program officers and others as well) for getting this work done in a compressed period with many other stressors.

More NIH chaos.

NICHD, NIMHD and NIAID Directors are all dismissed.

Jeanne Marrazzo, director of NIAID, claimed that the Trump Administration’s actions
endangered research subjects, defied court orders & undermined vaccine research.

Earlier, Kennedy fired Susan Monarez of the CDC.

Resisting unethical policies costs you.

🇺🇸 These dedicated public servants risked their careers to deliver an urgent message. 🚨

While the 1st amendment grants them the right to speak on matters of public concern, their protection is not guaranteed under an administration hostile to free speech.

Please take the time to listen and boost 🔥

Federal workers are speaking out on how the Trump regime is harming Americans:

"We stand here today at a moment of the greatest assault of our lifetimes on our freedoms. The US Constitution is being shredded... We are here to call on Congress to stand up and stop it."

The best email you can receive from students right after a really complicated lecture is: "I was just thinking about class, [...] and I just wanted to say that I have been so inspired to learn more. It is so awesome and mind blowing how it all works I am still trying to wrap my head around it." 🥰

25% of Drs in US are foreign grads. Many are on an H1B visa. This will hit health systems hard especially rural hospitals and hospitals in underserved areas that sponsor these visas through waiver programs. The old cost was about 5000$ a year.

i don’t think people on bluesky understand the severity of this situation.

i woke up to literally hundreds of texts from friends and family thinking about either moving back home to india or applying to other countries for jobs. this includes me.

Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

Two solutions that would bring back #MedPeds trained #doctors as well as increase #Pediatrics workforce:
1) pay #Pediatricians exactly same as adult medicine doctors for identical work (eg pediatric vs adult hospitalists)
2) provide same respect as IM doctors (which isn’t much, but more than Peds)
shematologist.medsky.social
In case you’re wondering, it’s barely fall & our children’s hospital is already almost always full with kids boarding in the ER.

And the pediatric workforce is stretched thin.

Our system does not have the capacity to care for the influx of vaccine preventable diseases that is coming.

A huge shoutout to all the dedicated grants management specialists at the NIH who are working around the clock to push grants out before the Sep 30 deadline. And also to the POs responding to frantic emails.
Not an easy job under the best of circumstances and right now it's the pits.
Thank you!

I am deeply saddened and angered by news that more NIH RIFs may happen next week. This is unacceptable, especially after NIH staff have worked nights & weekends to dig out from the backlog created by this admin's incompetence.

Tell your Congress people NIH needs its staff to keep delivering cures

All my afternoon meetings got cancelled, and I’m at peak caffeine vs. typing efficiency. Fifty pages of analyses to write or review. LET’S DO THIS.
Hand-drawn plot showing typing speed vs. coffee content, with three highlighted regions. At low coffee, in blue and labeled “morning”, typing speed is slow. Further along is a green bar with moderate-high coffee and high speed, labeled “ideal”. Furthest is a red zone that extends below the X axis of the plot, in which typing speed appears to fall off a cliff, labeled “SHIT.”

This is me, one of those 211. My A1 R01 renewal would have been funded otherwise, and I was even initially told they planned to fund it. Now very unlikely. No more chances with this one. We had so many good things going-how do we keep moving forward? A question many of us will be asking.

“This isn’t just about 211 missing R01 grants. This is about the 211 PIs (or multi-PI groups) that are not getting a new grant. This is about at least 422-844 non-PI level investigators who are not having their salaries covered.”
