SUNDAY READING:

Anna Jones invited me to take over her newsletter to talk about my beloved Mandalay, give my recommendations for what to watch, read, buy and more, and to share my recipe for the irresistible Burmese charred tomato salsa known as Pan Htway Pyaw 🇲🇲❤️

BLIMEY.

My brother-in-law's an absolute menace, *always* overdoes the brandy flames. I think a certain amount of it's to get me, a Risk Manager, to wig out as my reaction to 2ft flames on a pudding is quite funny (apparently). Don't think he's managed to set light to his wife's hand yet, though 😬

I enjoyed the chorus of "Yes, this is potentially dangerous, but it's kind of exciting, too, be honest" whoops that went up.

OMG where she's just pouring flames onto the table and he sets down the flaming pudding, realizes the table is catching fire and picks it back up. 🤣🤣😱

I miss when Twitter was truly great like the time a guy got upset at someone calling out a cricket team and started explaining how bowling worked and at the end OP was like "thanks for explaining btw I hold the world record for most career outs in cricket history"

Just had a flashback to a 6th form concert where I did my hair like Bjork and slapped on loads of makeup to sing Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos.

My mum was livid - she’d sent me out in school uniform and thought she was coming to see me do the harmony in the Flower Duet (which I also did, to be fair).

It is genuinely insane to see a judge describe Graham Linehan as a “generally credible witness” in a trial where he claimed Sophia Brooks has been engaged in “trans activism” since 2013 (when she would’ve been 6 years old), then, when challenged, claimed her drivers license lied about her age.

it’s so interesting how every trans person, even children, are “activists” for defending their basic humanity and dignity, whereas people who devote countless hours attacking trans people and their legal rights obsessively are never “anti-trans activists.” somehow all trans people are agender too.

Today I learned that stalking a 17 year old girl, writing up a 400 page 'dossier' about her, falsely reporting her to the police and smashing her phone does not constitute 'harassment'.

One wonders what *would*.

I thought this must have been taken out of context but nope. Here’s the article. He’s *lamenting* that Britain won’t be as tough as the US. His logic: control requires deterrence and deterrence demands misery.

Just a jaw-dropping paragraph in Trevor Phillips's column for The Times.

This is a policy that, by his own account, has left parents of a particular race too frightened to walk their children to school.

And that's the example he chooses of the "vigour" we "need".

It’s especially ironic because the lecture is exactly about the ‘paralyzing cowardice’ of today’s elites.

About universities, corporations and media networks bending the knee to authoritarianism. /4

This has happened against my wishes, and I’m genuinely dismayed by it.

Not because people can’t disagree with my words, but because self-censorship driven by fear (Trump threatening to sue the BBC) should concern all of us. /3

This sentence was taken out of a lecture they commissioned, reviewed through the full editorial process, and recorded four weeks ago in front of 500 people in the BBC Radio Theatre.

I was told the decision came from the highest levels within the BBC. /2

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1
