SUNDAY READING:

Anna Jones invited me to take over her newsletter to talk about my beloved Mandalay, give my recommendations for what to watch, read, buy and more, and to share my recipe for the irresistible Burmese charred tomato salsa known as Pan Htway Pyaw 🇲🇲❤️

Great piece on Tortoise’s matinee gig at the Barbican by John Mulvey.

Kind of wish I’d gone to both shows now!

I totally love this! Absolutely delighted for you.

Saw the Tortoise matinee show on Saturday and it was almost as good as your duck egg curry recipe. Almost 😋

Happiest thing though:

I got to give a copy of #MandalayBook to @johnherndon.bsky.social 🥰

We’ve been online pals for over a decade now, but I wrote Mandalay after the last time I saw Tortoise - and I acknowledged them in the book!

I drew him a little tortoise of course 🐢

The kind of show worth waiting (nearly) a decade for.

Tortoise at the Barbican, playing tracks from their stunning new album Touch, as well as beloved songs from their back catalogue.

Tortoise are the best live band I have *ever* seen and I have been to a *lot* of gigs.

During my tween/early-teen magic phase, I went to see a Penn and Teller show and chatted with them after. I asked their advice about being a magician.

Teller gave me a long, thoughtful answer about study and perseverance.

Penn said if I was interested in girls, quit magic and learn guitar.

This has been where I'm at lately also. It's getting harder to tell what is and isn't AI (sometimes) and it sucks having to meet every new with mistrust rather than the joy of discovery.
Morning thoughts about "AI".

Where do we go from here?

In two weeks is the 36th anniversary of the day a man walked into an engineering school at a Canadian university and slaughtered 14 people because they had the audacity of "giving his spot" to a woman.

Fuck your feelings, fellas.

I saw tortoise in a tent in Belgium having never heard of them and spaced out*. It was incredible.

* I don't think I was passively smoking weed, although it was a music festival near the Netherlands so I cannot guarantee it 🤣

On Myanmar itself "Mohinga Matters" published a strong piece that condemns the silence of many over the targeting of Rohingya by the Arakan Army & calls for principled approach to human rights violations by all who work towards a federal democracy.

Maybe this is more a British thing but I’m late Gen X and most of my peers agreed with Ben.

I actually liked the Beatles as well as Pixies and got mocked for it.
As someone who is this guy's age I can tell you 100% that if you were into Pixies, Nirvana, 120 Minutes stuff, etc. but didn't like the Beatles you had to have worked hard to contort yourself into that special little box. Your enemy, if you absolutely needed one, was hair metal. GTFO here with this.
