Read about Tomonobu Itagaki. He was a fucking rock star and his philosophy on video game design still make Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2 absolute one-of-a-kind action games 20 years on.

A new game in his franchise years after his leave is no reason to forget about the foundation he built.

Don't get me wrong, I have no ill will toward Team Ninja & c.o. reviving Ninja Gaiden; I think doing so with a new trilogy and new protagonist to pass the torch is a nice symbolic gesture.

But such gestures mean nothing if the industry keeps downplaying the creative voices that built them

Kojima's name at least had a chance of showing up in MGSΔ reviews... is the 2000s Ninja Gaiden discourse just forgotten now? Itagaki openly disliked what the series was doing after leaving, and NG3 became a directionless mess of a game in trying to be a reimagining. Ninja Gaiden was his baby.

I've read multiple reviews of Ninja Gaiden 4 now and it continues to upset me that Tomonobu Itagaki doesn't get mentioned despite his passing only a week ago. His groundbreaking game franchise is being revived without him, and yet reviews can only emphasize how good of a product the new one is.
