corridor zoning is bad policy!

when @michaeljanz.bsky.social convinced me to come check out Edmonton & give talk that became my book 'building for people' - i was floored they allowed 5-6 story buildings off polluted arterials, and 6-8 plexes everywhere. edmonton was leading the US and canada.
Opponents of infill said the quiet part loud today.

They don't believe renters should be allowed to live within their neighbourhoods, only on the fringes, by major roads.

Their primary, unifying, rallying concern is "homeowner value" and getting what's their's.

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Who's responsible? @abdaniellesmith.

NEW POST

While cities across North America struggle with housing shortages, Edmonton is proving that zoning reform works.

In 2025, for the first time in history, the number of homes permitted in 5-8 unit rowhomes surpassed detached homes. 🧵

Edmonton’s zoning reform is working. In 2025, newly legalized eight-home rowhomes drove a record increase in homebuilding, achieved by redeveloping only 0.39% of properties in mature neighbourhoods.

This is exactly what I mean. Every single day Canada picks and chooses when international law applies and when we can safely ignore it. Pretending otherwise is willful ignorance.
This is a dangerous and irresponsible response.

Cheering the illegal abduction of a foreign head of state and celebrating U.S. control over another country is wrong.

Canada cannot pick & choose when international law applies. If the rules only matter when it’s convenient, they don’t protect anyone

"Should I chain myself to a tree over this?"

A resident in Dovercourt is threatening to because an infill development is being built in her cul-de-sac.

But when we look at the numbers, the area's population has halved in the last 50 years, plenty of parking.

So, probably not

Don’t like rising property taxes? Consider:

- driving less/using transit more (to save our infrastructure)
- welcoming development in your mature neighbourhood (to add rate payers without building new infra)
- buying less from Amazon (they don’t pay taxes to us but use infra)
- going downtown

What does it take to move 1000 people? Smart infrastructure supporting choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money etc).

Mobility in cities is about space.
