Literary horror in the woods. Life assembled from found footage. Crawford & Shirley Jackson Award Nominee. Greener Pastures, The Inconsolables. Debut novel The October Film Haunt 9/30/25 from St. Martin's Press.
Pinned
Now available in bookstores and libraries everywhere! The October Film Haunt is my debut novel and a love letter to horror films and all of us who carry them in our hearts. And, if I may say so, pretty damned scary.

Sappier stuff after I visit a bookstore.

This one really hurts. Rest well, Catherine O'Hara. You were a great talent, and few people in history have had such a sparkle in their eyes. 71 is too young.

Rural vs. urban is certainly more accurate. I think it gets lumped into state categories simply because of elections. I live in Atlanta and am depressingly aware of how isolated we are.

My story “The Teeth of America” (free at michaelwehunt.com/2020/05/31/t...) imagines the beliefs of white supremacists transmuting them into literal monsters. But as grim as this story was years ago, it failed to predict how fully the alignment of the U.S. government with such evil could be.

I have been very much looking forward to Shelby Oaks and should really bump it to #1 on my list. Man Finds Tape also feels like it could share an affinity with the novel, so I need to watch that one, as well.

I appreciate all of this! Yeah, the pacing was certainly by design, but the fact that the book was typeset and packaged to look like a shorter novel than it is didn't do it many favors. It'll probably be a while before I write a novel that long again. Just glad it's been working for so many readers!

I'm so glad you got a copy!! Enjoy seeing me go a little darker, somehow. :)

Honored, Sam. And somehow only 8 months away 😳

Thanks, Chris. I've never thought about True Detective S1 in this context, but here's hoping there are more folks who loved its ending. :D

There are at least two or three stories in this one that legit broke my brain.

"No comment," said the heavy black lump and the Pine Arch Creature in the same grating voice.

What Bad Hand said! In fact, there's a scene in THE OCTOBER FILM HAUNT where Jorie watches a clip from a film project titled "The Pine Arch Collection," and there's a story in this collection called "The Pine Arch Collection." 🤔📼

😂 Perfect. No one who owns my book is getting a good night's sleep.

@michaelwehunt.bsky.social, your writing is thoughtful, resonates with me (and others, as well), and causes (good) anxiety in someone who has read a lot of scary stuff!

You deserve the recognition.
Strange to compartmentalize and celebrate something when [looks around at world], but I just learned that The October Film Haunt is on the Bram Stoker preliminary ballot. Long live the Pine Arch Creature.

Thank you for making me feel decidedly less icky about sharing good news in bad times. :)
