Responding to comments made by Fine Gael Minister Jennifer Carrol MacNeill earlier, Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns said:

"Minister Carroll MacNeill’s statement should be seen for the desperate distraction attempt that it is.

"It is genuinely disappointing to see a senior government minister reduced to cheap negative campaigning.

"From my own experience of campaigning with Catherine in recent weeks, I know that her message of positivity, social justice and inclusion is really resonating with people all over the country and her campaign has huge momentum.

"Those of us supporting Catherine’s bid for the presidency refuse to be distracted by baseless attacks from a Fine Gael party that is clearly lashing out and in panic mode."

Responding to today’s statement from Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, Deputy Bacik said:

"I am deeply disappointed to see today’s outrageous statement issued from a Minister who should know better.

"As a Fine Gael TD, Jennifer co-convened the all-party Oireachtas penal reform group with me. To see her being drawn into issuing this statement with its personalised and entirely spurious attack upon me and upon other party leaders shows that Fine Gael are now resorting to increasingly desperate smear tactics.

"With two weeks still to go in this election, they need to reflect on the manner in which they are conducting their campaign."

Interesting tidbit from the Journal's liveblog about the Budget. Sinn Féin continuing to show absolutely no interest in winning over the Green/environmentally-minded progressives they need to win 60 Dáil seats. Good to see they haven't learned their lessons from last year and are doubling down

Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy could be heard heckling Donohoe during the closing moments of his speech, as the minister confirmed the carbon tax increase.

“Surely Healy-Rae didn’t agree to that,” Carthy called.

The carbon tax increase is not a surprise, it’s worth noting – this is part of a scheduled annual increase.

The rise kicks in from midnight tonight, adding about 2.5 cents to the cost of a litre of petrol or diesel.

Genuinely think it will come down to how much will voters want the next President to be able to speak Irish. FF voters from the country (think Ò Cúiv, Pat The Cope Gallagher, the Cowen voters) would be willing to hold their nose and give their 2nd preference to Connolly over Humphreys
