The secret to a long marriage is to be as horny for your partner every day as the Irish Times is for John Boyne.
As someone laid off both in Jan and in Nov over the years, I get the logic of the guy in that article that knowing in advance before you spend a fortune over Xmas might be better.

Employers seemingly disregard etiquette, laying off employees right before the holidays
The once common ritual fell out of fashion following the Great Recession, until this year.

I had a long talk with someone yesterday about how all prior logic and norms about the labor market have been called off because capital is in the final push to finally casualize white collar workers the way they’ve long wanted to do. From AI to non-competes to this. They smell blood in the water.

Welcome to Britain, a country so short of dentists that an MP's 87-year-old mum pulled her teeth out with pliers. Also a country with thousands of foreign-qualified dentists who can’t work until they pass an exam so oversubscribed it’s like trying to book Glasto tickets. www.ft.com/content/f4e5...

Setting aside AIB being belligerant dicks, both govts are at fault for not bothering to develop the tax measures necessary to deal with the reality of cross-border employment
AIB staff living in Northern Ireland and working in the Republic have been told they must work five days a week in an office in the Republic of Ireland or face termination.

I read a lot of science fiction growing up, thought about a lot of ways the human race would push itself into self-extinction, but I don't think I ever came across the notion that we would invent a machine that would do all the fun, imaginative parts of life, leaving us to slowly die of boredom.

Spent a good bit of the last 5 days prepping for an interview. 90 mins beforehand it's cancelled: "we have enough candidate in late stages". I mean, you probably knew that last Friday.....

Mr O’Donovan said the Public Services Card “floundered because some interest groups outside of the House, interested more in privacy than other issues, got their way”. Funny way to characterise something which the independent regulator found illegal, imposing a €550,000 fine on the state.

it's basically how they 'dealt' with covid. just stop talking about it. pretend it doesn't exist.

Looking forward to what other regional employment tribunals the media will be reporting on en masse today! Race discrimination in Scunthorpe? Sex discrimination in Yeovil? Homophobia in Wrexham? Or is it only GCs who lost their case that get this treatment

I keep thinking of Beth Upton today, who won against an absolutely foul, racist bigot, and should be having the best day, but is still being monstered by our entire media, for the crime of merely existing as her authentic self and doing a job in the NHS that helps people, all day every day.
#C4News went above & beyond, reporting:

"a nurse has won a harassment claim against Dr Beth Upton."

No she didn't. NHS FIFE harassed her, not Upton.

This is almost defamatory, & they mentioned none of the dismissed parts or the implications for trans women in SS spaces. I complained to Ofcom.

Ok, let’s get really clear on what my job is NOT.

It is NOT to normalise having to move home as an adult because the state has failed you.

Do not abuse my profession in this way.

Recently approached by a recruiter in connection with a job with an actual pay range attached. As usual asked me what I was looking for. With 33 years experience I mentioned the lower end of the range. Still got ghosted.
Job ads should have a "how many clicks before I see the salary" number next to them.

Making job applicants pretend they aren't interested in the salary is such a bizarre fantasy to indulge. We should be able to call it a religion and tell them it's inappropriate at work.

One thing that struck me as I reported our story was how antagonistic, even personal, senior FIRE officials are in response to criticism. (I kept screenshots btw.)

So I'll list the questions we sent to FIRE last week. We would've liked to have heard their thinking and incorporated it into our story

Gareth Sheridan was able to get all this name recognition and media coverage off a failed presidential bid and he didn't even have to lose a deposit.

We should be charging these chancers for our time.
So, if anything, the real problem that needs to be solved before #Áras32 is that a person should have to pay their deposit before they are considered a potential nominee by radio and TV producers. A portion unrefundable if they don't get nominated.

Weed out the grifters!
