As Twitter's new geolocation tool started to reveal accounts’ information, the effect was like watching the Scooby Doo kids pull one disguise after another from the villain of the week.

Hilarious and alarming though it all was, it's just the latest indication of one of the site’s oldest problems.
Twitter's foreign influence problem is nothing new
The platform's just-debuted geolocation tool illuminates a disturbing and persistent issue.

“Wealth inequality is the most common and crucial element in societal collapse,” says Luke Kemp of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk. “It corrodes the social fabric … hollows out societies, leaving them to be a brittle shell which can be cracked asunder by numerous different shocks.”

Care in the community gets rebranded every couple of years. Kick patients out of hospitals to be cared for "closer to home" in as yet non existent places. Probably a weekly visit from over stretched district nurses.

It was years ago.

Did you ever racially abuse fellow pupils?

Not in a hurtful way.

Did you ever racially abuse fellow pupils?

Not with intent.

Not genuine abuse.

It hadn't occurred to me until I listened to @quietriotpod.bsky.social that there could be an element of Trump nobbling Vance in putting this plan forward.

This is how the JD Vance (seemigly Kremlin-drafted) Ukraine "Peace Plan" went down with *Republican* lawmakers. No wonder Trump is distancing himself from it, at a rate of knots.

Centrists.
This need for a legible social order expresses itself in what social psychologists call "system justification." We have a propensity to justify & defend the social order we are born into-- *even if we are at the bottom of that order* --because a system that makes sense is preferable to uncertainty.

I interviewed psychologist John Jost about this. He was curious why history contains so many long periods in which massive groups of people are oppressed by relatively tiny groups -- when, on a purely physical basis, the oppressed could overwhelm oppressors at any time. They just tend not to. Why?
Why social change is so excruciatingly difficult
When we look across the broad sweep of human history, what needs explaining is not times of rebellion and upheaval, but the much more common periods of unjust rule facing little resistance. Why do peo...
