if you don't consider work made for free or not for profit as worthwhile because it's "devaluing the space" for more "serious" career artists, i don't know what to say to you. that is a completely irresponsible position to have in this day and age and throws a ton of great art under the bus

also a lot of the supposed "middle class dilettantes" in this category are people on the fringes and barely scraping by. and besides, middle class "dilettantes" have made some of our greatest art anyway - see the work of Charles Ives, insurance salesman.

my feelings on this
a) the idea that you can't make a living off art is sad because it reflects a world where art has been devalued to a massive degree
b) the idea that work made as part of a creative industry is the only kind of real worthwhile or consequential art is totally ridiculous and false
If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.

Here's a very short clip to sort of show you what I mean. Just gorgeous. And appropriately creepy as heck, but gorgeous.

FUCK now I've been made to think about formalism in videogames again. Damn I might as well go fully back in time and start gleefully retweeting Anna Anthropy and believing in things again

I played Horses this weekend and I wrote down some messy thoughts not only on the game but especially on the specter of formalism that emerged to haunt us all for a moment.

I thought this was going to be a review of my time with Santa Ragione's Horses, the controversial art game recently banned from Steam and the Epic Store. To some extent, this will be that but after...

One of my neighbors has been putting up these fish facts posters. All kinds of different fish, marine, freshwater, deep, shallow, all kinds. This is a good one. “Stg this real fish” took me out. Good work, neighbor.

I am fascinated by Congo, which is why I have never watched it. The sacred notion I have of it in my head is too perfect to profane. Just seems like the perfect alignment of so many regrettable 90s movie trends.

Lol Michael Crichton left the production of the movie Congo because he was outraged that they didn't want to use a real gorilla for the friendly gorilla character. I dunno why, but that really amuses me.

Deeply embarrassed that I accidentally shared an ai generated video. Ew. Did not know it was ai and should have noticed that the ice agents uniform said "pice" lol

I was listening to Willie nelson not long ago, love him so much. Anyway he was singing a song about how the autumn has taken all of the other leaves on the tree and he's the last one left, fucking gutted me. Imagine, all those friends and collaborators gone.

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).
