Of all the magazine stories I’ve written in the last few years, this one might be the biggest and closest to my heart. For Mountain Gazette, I went for a long summer trek along private beaches in Cape Cod; a tiny sliver of Massachusetts’ privatized coastline. Which we should reopen to the public.

I wrote about that bonkers yet grimly believable NYT story about how Mark Zuckerberg may have just bought a mountain in Maine; a mountain that Mainers enjoyed hiking before the fences and security cameras started appearing.

Did Mark Zuckerberg just buy a mountain in Maine?

I was just reminded that the median income in Boston is around $15,000 higher than the median income in New York.

One substantial difference between these two cities, when it comes to affordability, is how much rent controlled housing NYC has.

I just sent my urban trail building resume to Zohran Mamdani's transition team.

I mean, how could I not?

The guy literally walked across Manhattan, and NYC is the U.S. capital of walkability and urban green spaces.

Total moon shot, but I had to do it.

Hey, authors. Remember two months ago when a bunch of us discovered that our publishers never registered some of our books w/ the US Copyright Office? Well, I just learned this over the weekend. Currently in talks with my publisher and @authorsguild.org. Does anyone have any recent updates to share?

Generative AI is proof that it's possible to become radicalized with age.

Authors: Remember back in September when a lot of you found out that your publishers had never registered some of your books for copyright?

Well, I’m late to this fiasco, after searching the U.S. Copyright Office for my books (in light of the Anthropic lawsuit.)

How have your publishers responded?

I used to say those who work really hard to take away the rights of others are among the most hateful people on the planet.

But now we have those who work really hard to take food away from others.

And I am really struggling to comprehend that.

ICE has been seizing people in Allston. Boston area folks, spread the word about the LUCE hotline to report ICE sightings. And here's stickers you can print and put up anywhere:
Massachusetts folks: I made these stickers sharing LUCE's ICE hotline ☎️ 617-370-5023--they verify sightings and share confirmed info. Stickers fit 1"x2.6" label (Avery 5160). Image below or follow link for a full sheet. Print, stick every&anywhere. www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/7v098...

Something that won't depress or upset you: I wrote for @GlobeIdeas about two of my favorite places. Franklin Park's bear dens and a re-wilded industrial site in Buffalo called Silo City. Both are mirrors to our complicated past *and* a potentially brighter future.

I’m currently on the road doing research for an upcoming outdoor adventure book and it’s impossible for me to see the parched New England landscape and not think about the amount of water that AI companies suck up so that people can order GIFs of Darth Vader screwing a watermelon

This is an outstanding essay and I'm sharing it with friends and family who seem to be in the same place that Klein is.
I wrote about Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, why swallowing live frogs is a bad idea, and how context and history can release you from bright-kid syndrome, the illusion that you yourself are going to have every answer or fix the world.
You don't have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don't know what your core beliefs are, you're going to get played.

Recently, I spent 2 days walking across Acadia National Park from one end to the other. This was possible due to the presence of public transit, food, and lodging; in/around the park. So for the Boston Globe, I asked, what if this were the norm for more NPS sites?

Another violent attack by an ICE officer on a civilian at 26 Federal Plaza—this time on a journalist, who had to be carried out on stretcher.

Another attack on the First Amendment, our neighbors, and our democracy.

🚨 IMPORTANT THREAD 🚨

People are protesting the Broadview ICE facility tonight. This will likely be an extremely high-risk action. I caution you to consider your risk level before attending. I will not attend.

Attendance risks your safety, but also the safety of Broadview residents + detainees. 1/6

It's not clear how many troops would be involved or where they'd come from.
