I currently have a newsletter in which I write regularly about how societies devolve into authoritarianism & what that means right now in the US & around the world. It also features essays about my unsettled childhood in West Virginia. Soon, it will also include art, surprises, & links to resources.

I wrote about "Quiet, Piggy," natalist movements, the denigration of women in authoritarian societies, the ways that women were treated not so long ago in the workplace (including me), and how you can push back against all that.
Quiet, Piggy
Trump's relentless campaign against women has shifted U.S. culture.

This is heartbreakingly cruel and hypocritical. The same admin that has redefined refugee status to cover white South Africans is now going to drown thousands of refugees already approved for their status in red tape, potentially even seeking to strip some of their status and deport them.
Trump Admin planning a rule to re-decide whether *every* refugee who entered under Biden meets their criteria for a refugee. That’s 230,000 people! And no appeals!

He's also confusing what historians do with journalism. You don't get to cancel actual day-to-day reporting just because the guy will probably be around a long time.
Really is an awful article. A total PR piece.

The entire economy around here is based on everyone passing the same $40 in the last ten days of every month

One sign of a bubble is when the major players do gimmicks to hide the cost of the bubble.

If the thing was clearly a good value, they'd just say "look at us investing in this valuable thing," rather than this obvious shell game to avoid booking the cost of building a data center.
Meta’s data-center accounting gets the Jon Weil treatment:

It’s “financed with debt, and neither the data center nor the debt will be on its own balance sheet. That outcome looks too good to be true, and it probably is.”

And maybe the cranberry cake @lollardfish.bsky.social's wife makes.
Hello. Here’s a holiday cake for you. My wife is a professional recipe writer and is currently out of work and I’m trying to persuade her that her recipes are amazing. And there’s no bullshit narrative. Just recipes that work.

How does an amazing Congressional candidate like @bethmacy.bsky.social only have a few hundred followers??

Can we get her to 10k by Thanksgiving?
Beth Macy never thought she would run for Congress. But she knows democracy is on the line and couldn't resist the pleas of those who believe she's the only candidate who can beat the awful Ben Cline.

And if she flips this red seat in western Virginia, no more Speaker Johnson.
