I haven't decided what to do with this account. I got an account already for techie stuff on mastodon(1)

Bsky seems to be smart people who aren't *necessarily* techies, so maybe I'll just do my fav topics in a jumble

- philosophy
- astronomy, sci-fi
- economics

seems that RFK is clearing the path for his CDC to do tuskegee syphillis experiments as a matter of course. in other news, RFK is a genuine monster who relishes in the pain and suffering of those he feels he has control or dominion over
RFK is undoing human subjects protections so he can conduct placebo trials of vaccines. That means infecting people knowingly. I wonder who will “volunteer” for these trials? If history is any guide, a lot of incarcerated and other powerless people.
Dismantling the Institutional Review Board (IRB), that oversees all human subjects research, is bad. Really bad.

US Government accounts have arrived on Bluesky.

Block on sight.

Protect your digital space.

Be aware that the DHS account in particular is known to quote dunk on regular people to encourage their followers to harass them.

The detach quote function will come in very handy here…

Cops led us into the street as the new “protest zone” and then beat us repeatedly.

Got hit in the face with a baton. Leaving to pick up my friends who were arrested.

Stay safe out there.

A lot of people don’t care if something is actually true or not as long as it feels good to say. Or worse still, come to believe something is true, simply because it feels good to say. I really wish people would resist this instinct. Commitment to truth is vital and without it we have nothing.

If anyone's wondering how this is possible, the answer is these strike teams are moving terrifyingly fast. Grab first, ask questions later. We were about 8-15 minutes behind them today for several hours. They're jumping out of vans, chasing people across lawns, taking them from bus stops, etc
30 people disappeared in this shaded area today.

Swearing in isn’t some ceremony. You aren’t a member of Congress until it happens. He knows that.

No phones, no staff, nothing.

I had to escort her into the Capitol on Wed bc Capitol police must treat her as a public visitor until she’s sworn in. And solo visitors aren’t allowed during shutdown!
Johnson: "Grijalva should be working for her constituents right now. I don't know what she's doing. I keep seeing their political stunt videos. She should be in her office. She should be working or in the district for her constituents" (Grijalva is not in fact a Rep. b/c Johnson refuses to seat her)
It is unethical to kill an animal except if it is breaking criminal law. Mice and insects in the house are guilty of trespass. Even then capital punishment should only be reserved for unrepentant, hardened criminals. Shield bugs have the right to a court-appointed representation.

Russell Vought says we need to illegally shut down the CFPB because it’s terrorizing small mom-and-pop lenders. The CFPB only regulates lenders with assets worth more than $10 billion. The amount of blatant spinning and lying in this administration is disgusting

Does your org run a self-managed version of @gitlab.com and publish your own #Python packages to @pypi.org ?

If you want to try out an alpha of Trusted Publishing for GitLab Self-Managed instances, let me know via DM - I'm collecting interest now, and should have something to show soon.

You don't have to judge Columbus by the standards of today. His tenure as governor of Hispaniola was so horrific that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to answer for his many crimes.

Plus he never set foot on any land that would ever be a part of the United States of America.

ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

That country is utterly lost. God this is so bleak. Combined with yesterday’s deeply upsetting story about Kingsley Bimpong dying from a stroke in police custody, the video of which is so horrific I cannot imagine how his family felt watching it, the US plumbs new depths every day. Don’t go there.
After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.
