In 2024, I recorded a video segment about Apeel, and have made several statements since about the company. After doing additional research and connecting with Apeel, I now realize that my video and my statements about Apeel and its products included many falsehoods and inaccuracies. I am sorry. To clarify:
• Apeel's products are safe, not toxic, and can be washed off.
• Apeel is not owned, controlled by, or involved with Bill Gates or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
• Apeel has made clear that its products are plant-based and non-GIMO, and Apeel has secured approval for use on produce by the FDA and EU.
• Apeel is not "sprayed on fruits and vegetables which are on the verge of spoiling". The whole point of Apeel's products is to extend the quality and life of produce at peak freshness so that the quality can be maintained all the way to consumers.
• Apeel's products do not just make the produce "appear fresh". Apeel's products actually help produce stay fresher for longer by reducing loss of moisture and reducing oxidation.
• Apeel's Organipeel product for use on USDA organic produce has not been commercially available or used by Apeel for about 2 years. Importantly, Organipeel is not just the same product Apeel offers for conventional produce with a different name.

• "Glycidol" is not another name for any of Apeel's ingredients - glycidol is an entirely different substance and is not used by Apeel in any of its products.
• Apeel does not use solvents or heavy metals in its manufacturing process.
• My video segment also should not have included social media video clips of rubbery fruit. None of the original source videos make any mention of Apeel, and Apeel doesn't even offer products for some of the types of produce shown. I have been informed that rubbery fruit is a phenomenon that is possible due to other factors like harvesting produce at the wrong time or improper refrigeration and storage conditions in the supply chain.
The truth about our food is something I take seriously, especially as a journalist, and I hope that my statement can help shed more light on the false, misinformation that has spread about Apeel, and the positive things Apeel is actually seeking to accomplish for our food system.
